Christians Keep Fighting for your Rights

Even after the Christmas Season
John R. Houk
© December 31, 2011

I just finished reading the Christmas message from the Patriot Post’s Mark Alexander. I realize this is December 31 and the New Year will be upon us at midnight; however this is more than a Christmas message. The message is a defense of Christianity as a foundation for the USA’s existence both in government and culture.

Alexander begins with a rebuke of taking the “Christ” out of Christmas with such sanitized greetings such as “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Xmas”. Actually Alexander has a clarification for the rebuke. On a Constitutional basis, corporations and private business have the right to sanitize their portrayal of Christmas. This is America, right? It is a Constitutional-First Amendment of Free Speech and Religious Freedom to market commerce for a profit as long as there is no harm intended for the Constitution. Of course it is the right of Christians to NOT spend their money at businesses that go out of their way to diminish Christmas and Christianity.

Then Alexander assails the U.S. government’s (Executive, Legislative and Judiciary) bowing to Leftists that war on Christianity by forcing all things Christian to be separate-ostracized from all public performance or edifice. This part of Alexander’s essay is relevant all year long and not just for the Christmas season. Read “Our Founders Were Forthright About Faith” and support the right of Christians to be Christian even with involvement with the Public Weal.

P.S. If you happen to read this before midnight on December 31, be sure to support the efforts of the Patriot Post because their funding is based on private donations rather than political affiliations and advertising (The Patriot Post does have a store). Every year the Patriot Post has an annual fund raising campaign that is made public with a goal to meet the yearly budget. The Patriot Post is political so to avoid IRS interference donations are not tax deductable.

America's Christian Heritage v Season's PC

"The Commander in Chief directs that divine Service be performed every Sunday at 11 oClock in those Brigades to which there are Chaplains; those which have none to attend the places of worship nearest to them. It is expected that Officers of all Ranks will by their attendence set an Example to their men. While we are zealously performing the duties of good Citizens and soldiers we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of Religion. To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian. The signal Instances of providential Goodness which we have experienced and which have now almost crowned our labours with complete Success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of Gratitude and Piety to the Supreme Author of all Good." --George Washington, General Orders, (May 2nd, 1778)

Each year, our family observes with due respect and reverence six national historic days of recognition: Patriots Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Constitution Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

However, the most hallowed religious observance for our family -- that with the most deeply rooted traditions, is Christmas. It is not a commercial feeding frenzy for us, but a quiet and reverent time of rest and celebration of the birth of Christ, punctuated by extended family festivities.

Unfortunately there is a perennial societal tension now associated with Christmas. If not for its dire implications for the future of Liberty, the seasonal contortions over "non-offensive greetings" would be humorous. The Left insists the word "Christmas" violates the phony "Wall of Separation" doctrine if a government employee deigns to utter it within earshot, and that it is too ethnocentric for corporate use.

Some years ago, The Patriot Post coined the greeting "Happy Christmahanakwamadan." We did so in response to the fashionable PC crowd's ludicrous demands for "inclusive faith neutral" greetings. We also published our legal department disclaimer outlining the terms of acceptance for the greeting as a counterpoint to retailers vying for your business who have instituted policies discouraging or outright prohibiting any mention of "Christmas." We do not challenge private sector employer's right to dictate corporate policies on such matters.

However, the ongoing campaign to censor Christmas from public forums is another matter.

For example, this year there were disturbing new guidelines advising members of Congress and government employees that it would be unethical and even illegal to use specific religious greetings in conversation and correspondence with constituents and service recipients. While Virginia Rep. Scott Rigell recorded his rejection of those guidelines, this is an ominous development and foreboding precedent.

Ironically, it's often these same censors who take shortcuts such as wishing folks "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Xmas." Perhaps they're unaware that the word holiday is derived from "Holy Day," and that Xmas is derived from combining the Greek letter "chi," denoting "Christ," with the Old English word for "Mass."

Meanwhile, over in the Executive Branch, Barack Hussein Obama recently found Jesus when dedicating the 60-foot-tall 2011 Capitol Christmas Tree. Of course, this was only in response to polls indicating that Christians give Obama his lowest job approval ratings. Turns out that Jesus Christ is conspicuously absent from the Capitol Christmas Tree in the form of any ornaments. The tree is adorned, however, with prominently placed handmade ornaments paying adoring tribute to Obama. When our colleagues at Media Research Center inquired about the lack of Christian ornaments, the Architect of the Capitol office responded, "There may be ornaments like those you describe near the top of the tree, or they could have been obscured or moved due to wind or weather."

No question there is a lot of "wind" around the White House these days.

For the record, civilian Inspectors General and military JAGs cause a lot of heartburn for millions of government and military personnel, who must constantly check their comments because they will lose jobs or advancements in rank because of any public remark that might be construed to advocate a particular theological viewpoint. However, there is no basis in our authentic Constitution for such stringent expurgation, and that would be the same venerable document that outlines the Liberties both civilian and military government employs pledge to "support and defend."

Our Founders, the framers of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution, had no such concerns about public expressions of faith, as none was warranted. Conversely, they were bold about promoting Christianity and speaking about their own faith.

Historian Peter Lillback, author of "Sacred Fire," an exhaustive scholarly treatise on George Washington, notes that it is only in recent years, with the searchable digital publication of our Founders' writings, that we get an accurate picture of their faith, and expression of same.

Lillback writes, "Washington referred to himself frequently using the words 'ardent,' 'fervent,' 'pious,' and 'devout.' There are over one hundred different prayers composed and written by Washington in his own hand. He described himself as one of the deepest men of faith of his day when he confessed to a clergyman, 'No Man has a more perfect Reliance on the alwise, and powerful dispensations of the Supreme Being than I have nor thinks his aid more necessary.' Although he never once used the word 'Deist' in his voluminous writings, he often mentioned religion, Christianity, and the Gospel. He spoke of Christ as 'the divine Author of our blessed religion.' He wrote of 'the blessed religion revealed in the Word of God.' He encouraged seekers to learn 'the religion of Jesus Christ.' He even said to his soldiers, 'To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian.'"

Believe it or not, Washington did not need to consult pollsters or focus groups, as General or President, before issuing proclamations of faith. He spoke them from his heart, just as most of our Founders did.

Here follows, in alphabetical order, a small sample of how other notable Founders expressed their faith.

John Adams: The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God. ... The Christian religion is, above all the religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of wisdom, virtue, equity and humanity.

Samuel Adams: I [rely] upon the merits of Jesus Christ for a pardon of all my sins. ... I conceive we cannot better express ourselves than by humbly supplicating the Supreme Ruler of the world ... bringing in the holy and happy period when the kingdoms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ may be everywhere established, and the people willingly bow to the scepter of Him who is the Prince of Peace. ... We may with one heart and voice humbly implore His gracious and free pardon through Jesus Christ, supplicating His Divine aid ... [and] above all to cause the religion of Jesus Christ, in its true spirit, to spread far and wide till the whole earth shall be filled with His glory.

John Hancock: That the spiritual kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ may be continually increasing until the whole earth shall be filled with His glory.

Patrick Henry: Being a Christian ... is a character which I prize far above all this world has or can boast. ... The Bible is a book worth more than all the other books that were ever printed. ... This is all the inheritance I can give to my dear family. The religion of Christ can give them one, which will make them rich indeed.

John Jay: Condescend, merciful Father! to grant as far as proper these imperfect petitions, to accept these inadequate thanksgivings, and to pardon whatever of sin hath mingled in them for the sake of Jesus Christ, our blessed Lord and Savior; unto Whom, with Thee, and the blessed Spirit, ever one God, be rendered all honor and glory, now and forever. ... The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next. Continue therefore to read it and to regulate your life by its precepts. ... Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation, to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.

Thomas Jefferson: I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others. ... I am a real Christian -- that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ.

James Madison: I have sometimes thought there could not be a stronger testimony in favor of religion or against temporal enjoyments, even the most rational and manly, than for men who occupy the most honorable and gainful departments and [who] are rising in reputation and wealth, publicly to declare their unsatisfactoriness by becoming fervent advocates in the cause of Christ.

I saved my favorite quote on Christmas for last: "How many observe Christ's birth-day! How few, his precepts! O! 'tis easier to keep Holidays than Commandments." --Benjamin Franklin (1743)

My point in listing these snippets of wisdom from our Founders is to make the case plain that the Left's proscription on the expression of faith, censorship that is antithetical to the very existence of our Constitution and Liberty, will not cease until such expressions have been expelled from all public venues and forums. Then, and only then, can the rule of men fully supersede the Rule of Law.

Please join our team in prayer for our uniformed Patriot Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines serving in places far away, and especially for the families enduring their absence, so that we might once again celebrate Christmas as a free people.

As always, on behalf of our staff and National Advisory Committee, I am humbled to stand with you among the ranks of our Patriot countrymen. We wish peace and God's blessing upon you and your family.

Happy Holy Days and Merry Christ's Mass! And in keeping with the spirit of this season, remember that attitude is a reflection of gratitude -- a grateful heart leads to a joyful spirit!

P.S. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to support our 2011 Year-End Campaign today by making a contribution -- however large or small. If you prefer to support us by mail, please use our printable donor form.

Bare Naked Islam Shutdown by Word Press

John R. Houk
© December 30, 2011

I have been going through my RSS feeds at Google Reader. I don’t know why I still have Little Green Footballs on my RSS. The big football over there has it in for bloggers that wish to expose Islam as a theopolitical religion that its very essence is antithetical to the American way of life that was initiated by our Founding Fathers as well as being an overtly racist religion.

The idiocy of the hatred of LGF’s Charles Johnson has called Pamela Geller a racist bigot for her part in exposing Islam. Here is a Johnson quote on Geller I found on Helian Unbound:

The fact is that there are plenty of good reasons to make the judgment that Pamela Geller promotes crazy hate speech, racist groups, and conspiracy theories; her main targets are Muslims, but many of these reasons have nothing to do with Islam, radical or otherwise.

This Helian Unbound post demonstrates the hypocrisy of Charles Johnson. The post proceeds to quote Johnson racism and incitement:

Congratulations, Glenn (Beck). You’ve now succeeded in being even more of a gratuitous race-baiter than Rush Limbaugh.

++++++++++

Some days it seems as if the right wing blogosphere has become possessed by the Demons of Utter Stupidity.

++++++++

In his feverish rush to smear LGF by any means possible, wingnut hateblogger Ace of Spades makes an accusation. (Amid a whole bunch of outright lies.)

+++++++

This is the kind of person who represents the right wing blogosphere: a rank hypocrite, who accuses others of the unethical acts he performs himself.

+++++++++

World Net Daily’s source for their latest insane Birther article is James Edwards — an open white supremacist who runs the vile “Political Cesspool” radio show in Tennessee: Hawaii elections clerk: Obama not born here.

+++++++++

I haven’t been paying much attention to raving Birther kook Orly Taitz’s campaign for the GOP nomination for secretary of state, but amazingly, there’s actually a chance she might win today

+++++++++++

Fox News Hitler pimp Glenn Beck has a new favorite author:

+++++++++++

Nothing new about any of this, Blair, you freaking brain-dead right wing moron. Try harder next time.

++++++++++

Today’s disgusting right wing racist is South Carolina Republican Senator Jake Knotts.

If Johnson ever was a Conservative has totally abandoned the Right to become a Left Wing writer of hate. As any good Leftist will do, Johnson will delete or edit any incriminating posts or comments to protect his LGF sainthood. This is one reason I sought quotes from somewhere other than LGF itself.

I point out this nature of Charles Johnson because it is through a rant of his against Pamela Geller that I discovered Bare Naked Islam (BNI) was shut down by the blog’s host WordPress.com. Johnson praises WordPress.com and castigates Geller for her timely and vociferous post at Atlas Shrugs leveled at WordPress.com for dropping BNI. Evidently WordPress.com believes BNI violated its terms of service; however the closure was a result of Muslim complaints supported by Hamas-Muslim Brotherhood connected Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) against BNI. As of today this is what you are directed to if you attempt to go to the BNI blog:

barenakedislam.wordpress.com is no longer available.

This blog has been archived or suspended for a violation of our Terms of Service.

For questions or concerns, contact WordPress.com Support.

Who knows how long even this slim piece of information is available; nonetheless be a person that clicks the “WordPress.com Support” link above to complain about this attempt to censor Free Speech merely because of the hypocrisy that some Muslims were offended by a BNI portrayal of Islam.

Pamela Geller is correctly angry with WordPress.com and CAIR for this kind of censorship. Geller’s defense of BNI demonstrates the hypocrisy involved in this act of shutting BNI because CAIR is a radical Islamic group of which BNI would expose as a group dedicated to bring intolerant Sharia Law as the law of the land in America.

Geller urges everyone that has a Word Press blog to shut down voluntarily in protest; however I am probably one of many that will ignore this voluntary action. I use my Word Press blog kind of as a place to disseminate info that leads back to my main blog SlantRight.com. If you do not have much invested in your Word Press blog, by all means take it down. If you have a lot invested in your Word Press blog OR if you have no Word Press blog I urge you to complain to WordPress.com Support!

No Brainer – Don’t Trust Pakistan

John R. Houk
© December 29, 2011

Shoebat.com has posted a video that is a documentary of the death of Usama Bin Laden. The important theme of this video is that Pakistan aided Bin Laden in hiding him in plain sight.

This is not a surprise because Pakistan’s Intelligence community – Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) – is a byzantine style government within a government and the ISI were and are very supportive of the radical Islam of the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

Pakistan’s military are not really supportive of radical Islam as much as it supportive of Pakistan National Interests. The primary objective of Pakistan’s National Interests is to focus on its mortal enemy India. In 1947 the British succumbed to India’s nationalist movement and departed; however the political expediency in the hope to prevent an India civil war was to create a rough division between India’s Muslims and India’s Hindus as well as other ethnic and religious people that were neither Muslim nor Hindu. The non-Muslim/non-Hindu population pretty much stayed with the Hindu side of India. The foolish non-Muslim populations that determined to live in the Muslim majority areas which became known as Pakistan found themselves a persecuted people. The Christians, Hindus and other non-Muslims of the new Pakistan fled to India or became exploited in Pakistan. For the most part Christians that could not afford to flee remained in Pakistan. In 1947 Pakistan was one nation separated by the immense Indian Sub-Continent. East Pakistan eventually became the independent nation of Bangladesh. It is the Pakistan of the west that is a nuclear power that is the arch-enemy of India which also is a nuclear power.

The one thing that unites the byzantine elements of Pakistan is the hatred of India. The Pakistan military over the years since 1947 has taken a secular approach to its contribution in governance. The ISI appears to be more inclined toward the religious interests of the Pakistan people; i.e. the religious interests of Islamic Supremacism.

I would be surprised if the Pakistan military actively hid Usama bin Laden but I am certain that ISI interaction with the military provided elements that were aware bin Laden was in Pakistan. I am absolutely convinced the ISI was actively hiding bin Laden in Pakistan AND that means keeping bin Laden from America. Getting bin Laden is one of the primary objectives in going to war with the then Taliban dominated Afghanistan.

So what would be the reason that the ISI pretend to be a friend with America and hide UBL? I speculate that reason was hatred of India. The ISI wanted to protect the Taliban in case they could be used as an agent of subversive activities if the American supported Afghan government began to show favorable relations with India. In the ISI’s eyes an economic-trade situation between Afghanistan and India might lead to the Indian military establishing bases of operation under the auspices of protecting Afghanistan but surrounding Pakistan with the threat of military action. AND the threat of nuclear war between Pakistan and India has been on the precipice over the years.

Ultimately Pakistan cannot be trusted because their National Interests are focused on India and Pakistan Foreign Policy as it concerns the USA is at best an element of manipulation. It would behoove America to begin secret negotiations of a military alliance with India. Pakistan will eventually sell-out America especially if there is a drawdown of the American military in Afghanistan as the perception grows that America has down all it can for the Afghan government. It is at this point the Taliban will test the Afghan government to see if it is too corrupt to sustain administrative control of the Afghan nation. If the Taliban finds success, you can count on Pakistan probably through the ISI will begin planning with the Taliban to bring down the American supported Afghan government.

Ron Paul’s Issues in 2008 are the same for 2012

John R. Houk
December 28, 2012

Rep. Ron Paul is a rock star with ideas to turn America solvent with a balanced budget, ending the Federal Reserve, expunging wasteful government programs and slicing government bureaucracy as well as unneeded Departments on the Cabinet level. Rock stars are entertainers with a stalwart fan base.

Paul has serious problems on issues outside of money/finance. Paul would return America back to an antebellum Foreign Policy agenda rendering America’s global influence and National Interests impotent which in turn would create security problems for the USA that would be a Leftist dream. The dream for the Leftist is to make America so vulnerable that foreign interests would destroy American Constitutionalism. Now I doubt it is Paul’s agenda to destroy America; however the isolationism he would lead America toward would gut America as it conformed to international treaties and laws rendering the U.S. Constitution a document of historical study. Now I realize Ron Paul denies that he is an isolationist; however that is kind of like an apple denying it comes from a tree.

Then there are the racist issues Ron Paul has subscribed to in the past that he pretty much keeps to himself but was very public with in his early political days. I have posted on those issues in the past when Paul ran for the GOP nomination in 2008: HERE and HERE.

And here we are nearing 2012 and one of Ron Paul’s former aides is exposing the prejudice there is against Jews and Israel. Conversely this means Ron Paul is pro-Palestinian. If you are not aware of it, the Palestinians have such Jew-hatred inculcated into their culture that killing a Jew and the friends of the Jews (i.e. America) is a moment to rejoice.

Here is that information from Debbie Schlussel reporting on the thoughts of Eric Dondero along with Ron Paul tidbits exposing a friendship with radical Islam.

Overpopulation Stuff – Tony Newbill

Tony Newbill writes (in several emails) about Leftist utopianism in which a ruling elite desire to create circumstances in which the planet Earth’s population is reduced substantially (we are talking billions) that the Secular Humanist vision of a Green Earth maintains a sustainable population for food consumption and human waste.

If that intro is too cryptic to understand, Obama has people in places of power that is on an extra-Constitutional basis that desires to exterminate billions of people to keep earth an inhabitable planet as defined by Malthusian elitist rule.

Romney RINO rides Dem Ass

John R. Houk
© December 23, 2011

Tony Newbill has been loading me up with links that demonstrate Mitt Romney is a Republican in Name ONLY (RINO) in a huge way.

In a 12/21/2011 email Newbill sent three links that tie Romney to Leftist thought on population control. And when I say population control I mean de-populating the earth to make earth resources more sustainable for those chosen humans to use in a way that is comfortable for the chosen few and the Secular Humanist Green Earth.

Now two of those links are the same story from the same author so I’m using the Human Events story. The first link is from a blog that begins with Mitt Romney’s connection and association with John Holdren which is one of President Barack Hussein Obama’s Czars. Holdren is one of these Left Wing de-populate the earth at all costs to save the earth.

The blog post on Romney-Holdren is excellent but lengthy and spends most of its space on Holdren. I am going to excerpt the part that relate to Romney; however if wish to know the Obama-Holdren agenda for planet earth and humanity you would do well to read the whole thing.

The Human Events article focuses on Mitt Romney’s connect to Paul Tsongas a former Dem Senator from Massachusetts. Romney was supporting Tsongas’ run for the Dem nomination for President in 1992. Tsongas was plugged into Holdren thoughts on de-population of the human race and eco-Marxist concepts of extreme Green ideology at the expense of Liberty and the Free Market to return the earth to some kind of illusory pristine utopian magical environment for the chosen few. The first half of the article is about Paul Tsongas the second half is about Romney’s support for Tsongas’ run for the Dem nomination in 1992.

Republican Mitt Romney consulted Population Control Eugenics Czar John Holdren

October 18, 2011
Excerpted from: Saynsumthn’s Blog
Original Newbill Link: World Freedom Watch

So we’ve learned over the past few days that a trio of Mitt Romney’s chosen advisers helped the Obama administration craft ObamaCare. And on top of that, that Gov. Romney sought the advice of Malthusian green activist John Holdren, when Romney was considering a cap and trade regime for Massachusetts.

Holdren’s views humanity as a plague on the planet and the Industrial Revolution as a tragic mistake. The fewer people, he believes, the better, and he’s not shy about the ways he would use to reduce their number.

Why Gov. Romney, a reasonable person, would pick such a man to advise him on anything is beyond us.

On Jan. 1, 2006, Massachusetts became the first state to regulate CO2 emissions from power plants, something the Obama administration is trying to do to all states through the Environmental Protection Agency’s draconian job-killing regulations and mandates.

A Dec. 7, 2005 memo from the governor’s office announcing the new policy listed among the “environmental and policy experts” providing input to the policy one “John Holdren, professor of environmental policy at Harvard University.”

This is the same person who wrote that a “massive campaign must be launched to restore a high-quality environment in North America and to de-develop the United States.”

Holdren wrote that along with Paul and Anne H. Ehrlich in the “recommendations” section of their 1973 book, “Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions.”

Paul Ehrlich is also the author of the 1968 tome, “The Population Bomb,” which warned of imminent mass starvation from overpopulation unless excess humanity is dispensed with.

Holdren has spoken in favor of such things as forced abortions, confiscation of babies, mass involuntary sterilization, bureaucratic regulation of family size, and a planetary regime to enforce climate regulation and population control.

Read Rest of story here [SlantRight: a further excerpt]

Campaigning: The GOP front-runner for 2012 sought advice on global warming and carbon emissions from the president's current science czar — an advocate of de-developing America and population control.

Politics is said to make strange bedfellows, but no coupling in our view is more bizarre than when John Holdren, now President Obama's assistant for science and technology, once advised GOP presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney on environmental policy.

Holdren's bizarre views are best suited for an adviser to someone like, say, Pol Pot.

He views humanity as a plague on the planet and the Industrial Revolution as a tragic mistake. The fewer people, he believes, the better, and he's not shy about the ways he would use to reduce their number.

Why Gov. Romney, a reasonable person, would pick such a man to advise him on anything is beyond us.

On Jan. 1, 2006, Massachusetts became the first state to regulate CO2 emissions from power plants, something the Obama administration is trying to do to all states through the Environmental Protection Agency's draconian job-killing regulations and mandates.

Romney, speaking at a University of New Hampshire town hall on June 3, said: "I don't speak for the scientific community, of course, but I believe the world's getting warmer. I can't prove that, but I believe based on what I read that the world is getting warmer. And number two, I believe that humans contribute to that."

So do Holdren and Al Gore.

In June, Gore, on his blog, praised Romney's climate stance: "While other Republicans are running from the truth, he is sticking to his guns in the face of the anti-science wing of the Republican Party."

After researching eugenics and I reading several chapters of the book, Ecoscience, written in the 70s, by Paul Holdren, who is Obama’s Science Czar, I can see clear signs that everything that is coming down from Washington was being birthed in our society in READ THE REST FOCUSING JOHN HOLDREN

Romney Voted for Population-Control Fanatic Presidential Candidate

11/30/2011

When he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992, Paul Tsongas repeatedly made it clear: He loathed President George H.W. Bush's flip-flopping on abortion and his inattentiveness to what Tsongas perceived as the urgent need for global population control.

And he won
Mitt Romney's vote in the 1992 Massachusetts presidential primary.

"This land, this water, this air, this planet, this rain, this is our legacy to our young, yet the Reagan-Bush years have been a time of cynical avoidance of one environmental issue after another -- acid rain, energy conservation, depletion of the ozone layer, global warming and uncontrolled world population," Tsongas, a former U.S. senator from Massachusetts, said when he announced his presidential campaign in April 1991.

"I will tell you very strongly the No. 1 environmental issue I'm going to push for when I'm president is population control around this world so we can turn to later generations and say something except, 'Sorry, folks,'" Tsongas vowed.

Two months later, Romney cast his vote for Tsongas.

That Massachusetts primary was a landslide in both parties. Bush beat Pat Buchanan
(who I served as research and issues director that year) 66 percent to 28 percent. Among Democrats, native son Tsongas took 66 percent to then-former California Gov. Jerry Brown's 15 percent and Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton's 11 percent.

Two years later, when he announced he would seek the Republican Senate nomination to challenge Ted Kennedy, Romney told the Boston Globe
about his vote for Tsongas.

"Romney confirmed he voted for former U.S. Sen. Paul Tsongas in the state's 1992 Democratic presidential primary, saying he did so both because Tsongas was from Massachusetts and because he favored his ideas over those of Bill Clinton," the Globe reported on Feb. 4, 1994. "He added he had been sure the GOP would renominate George Bush, for whom he voted in the fall election."

Romney's vote for Tsongas came up again in a profile the Globe published Aug. 7, 1994.

"Like his father, he wasn't a strong party man," the Globe said. "He had been a registered independent all his life. He still was, as he pondered the Kennedy challenge. He had even voted for Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Massachusetts Democratic presidential primary."

When the Los Angeles Times mentioned the Tsongas vote in a profile published Oct. 7, 1994, it did so in the context of Romney's wife pointing out that Romney had considered running for the Senate as an independent.

"When Romney decided to run, Republicans exchanged quizzical looks: 'We didn't know a single Republican when we jumped in in December,' his wife, Ann, says," the Times reported.

"As a registered independent, Romney had voted in the Democratic presidential primary in 1992 to support Paul E. Tsongas (though he backed George Bush in the general election, he says)," the Times reported. "He briefly considered running for the Senate seat as an independent, as well, his wife says, before rejecting the idea as impractical."

Thirteen years later, when Romney was seeking the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, he appeared on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos."  Stephanopoulos asked him about the Tsongas vote.

Now, Romney said he did it because he wanted the Democrats to nominate the weakest candidate.

"When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I'd vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for Republican," Romney said.

"I'm a Republican and have been through my life," Romney said. "I was with Young Republicans when I was in college back at Stanford. But a registered independent, so I could vote in either primary."

And that is the core of his explanation.
