'One Nation Under God' According to Jon McNaughton

On the Facebook group Evangelicals Gathering To Pray for our Country I found an outstanding post on his painting “One Nation Under God”. The painting is by Jon McNaughton and it was a ‘share’ from his facebook page. McNaughton’s original post was on July 6, 2015. My original intention was to post McNaughton’s Facebook entry as I found it shared at the Pray for our Country group. But the Facebook video embed included the text which I found inconvenient for my purpose.

McNaughton makes a living painting very patriotic and symbolic portraits. His Facebook description does not do the painting the justice I believe it should get. So this is what I am going to do. I am going to cross post some Youtube versions that explains the portrait better. Including one video that shows close-ups with patriotic music in the background – very inspiring. I will also include the Jon McNaughton facebook post from July 6 to see if that video shows up when I embed it.

To be honest the Facebook post includes a link providing a way to purchase a print of “One Nation Under God” which is something I highly encourage. I also recommend you check out some other patriotic prints of some original McNaughton prints.

After the Facebook post I wish to include one extra video that is only 48 seconds explaining McNaughton’s portrait of Obama burning the U.S. Constitution.

This simple phrase, added to the pledge of allegiance over 50 years ago has been the source of unbelievable debate and heated controversy. Likewise, the phrase 'In God We Trust' on our currency has been targeted and continues to be attacked as improper and politically incorrect. Lawsuits have been filed and legal minds employed to ascertain whether such statements violate the concept of 'separation of church and state'.

As this debate continues, some so called experts have implied or concluded that our Founding Fathers and Patriots were not religious. These secular champions, in an effort to further their own causes, have even painted these great men and women from our history as being devoid of religious passions or even a belief in God. This is a part of their strategy to remove any discussion of God from the public forum.

These men and women were passionately religious and saw the hand of God all around them. To God they gave Thanks for His Hand in the founding of this great nation. To Him, according to their own testimony they turned for wisdom and strength when life and liberty hung in the balance. Certainly the debate on separation of church and state will continue. But no one can dispute how our Founding Fathers and Patriots felt about God. The record is clear!

McNaughton's response to liberal criticisms of "One Nation Under God."

I would like to take a minute to explain some of the points of confusion for those who wish to interpret my picture.

  1. Each figure including Christ represents a symbol. Everything about the painting is symbolic. I don't pretend to know what Christ looks like. As I stated in my interview, I wanted to create an image that would instantly be recognizable as Jesus. I am not painting an anthropological Jesus. Nobody would recognize him if I painted him that way.

  1. The figures in the background have been the source of great debate. Let me make myself clear from my writing that just because they stand behind Christ, does not mean they are devout Christians evoking all to come unto Jesus and be baptized?! What I am saying is that they represent those who have influenced our country and our Constitution in a positive way. Many of these men and women gave their lives so we could have the liberties we enjoy. We are now at a time when these liberties are in peril. Our government has grown so big and powerful that the rights of the individual are at risk. This is what the Constitution was about—to limit the size of government. The patriotic heroes who stand behind Christ and the Constitution are pleading with us to defend the cause of liberty. Except for the pregnant woman in the lower right corner, these people symbolize those who have pushed our country towards Socialism. (The pregnant woman's place in the painting is explained on the website.)

  1. In connection to my last statement, I knew when I painted this picture that Thomas Payne (so sorry I offended some of you for spelling his name wrong), and Thomas Jefferson were Deists. That was irrelevant to me. I believe God brings about His purposes through different people. Even those who aren't baptized or following the accepted Christian religion.

  1. Not only have I received flack for this painting from Liberals, but also from the Right as well. Why did you include JFK? Why Lincoln? Why Teddy Roosevelt? I painted this picture to reflect my personal feelings about America. This is not a Republican painting. This is not anything other than one artist's personal feelings about his love for Christ, this country and a desire to make a point about where we are headed. I hoped that this painting would encourage dialogue and debate. It is important that you understand my position before you make assumptions.

  1. One of the most ridiculous criticisms I have read is that I don't have enough minorities in the painting. The way people throw around the word "racist" these days is overkill. From the beginning of the painting I chose to include a variety for ethnicities under the "Strong Americans" category. I also used different races in the background where I could. One of the most important positions in the painting is where the black U. S. soldier is standing.

  1. Some of the chatter going around on these liberal blog sites I feel is unfounded. One of the things I said to myself from the beginning was the knee jerk reaction some people would have to the painting would be very revealing as to which side they personally stood in the picture. If you don't believe the Constitution was inspired of God, fine. We will agree to disagree.

  1. Some so called "art experts" feel that a true painting should not be explained, but left to the viewer to interpret. I may not reveal all my thoughts, but I want the world to know what I think and feel—that's why I painted it! Great art causes one to feel. To feel deeply. I knew this painting would evoke emotion on both sides. I knew it was a unique concept, having never been painted before. I don't care if the composition is outdated or whether some other artist may have painted their composition better than me. The message stands alone.

  1. Why Satan? I don't for a second believe he looks like that, but I do believe he is real. Again, the image is symbolic. Having Satan near these people doesn't mean that they are Satanic. If you believe in God, surely you would believe in a Satan.

  1. OK, how could McNaughton be so ignorant about Charles Darwin and "Origin of the Species?" Yes, I have read the book and yes I do believe in many of the theories it espouses. What?! No, I don't' think the book should be burned and kicked out of the school curriculum. Some of the rebuttals I have heard in regard to this subject in my painting are unfounded. I believe that this book is a standard that the left uses to push Christianity out of the Educational Forum. I believe that we need faith in our schools. I believe that I did not evolve from an ape. You may disagree, but that is how I feel. Do I believe Evolution should be taught? Yes. Should Christian thought or any other religion be allowed to be discussed without reservation? Yes, as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others.

This is my personal witness and testimony as to the state of this nation. If you would like to ask more questions about my painting, I invite you to do so. I would be pleased to answer any honest questions regarding, "One Nation Under God."

Why the title "One Nation Under Socialism?"

Our federal government has been moving in the direction of socialism for over one hundred years. Many presidents and politicians have compromised the Constitution as we have given away our freedoms under the guise of entitlements and government intervention. When the people are willing to sacrifice the next generation for their current lifestyles and allow the federal government to have all the power for an illusory mess of pottage—you have chosen One Nation Under Socialism.

What do you mean by an ideology, which can never stand?

I will not support an ideology, which will lead to the destruction of America. In the history of the world, never has there been a recorded example where Socialism has led to the betterment of the human condition or improved the liberty of the people. I know there are varying degrees and definitions of "socialism." Even the European model of Democratic Socialism has proven to be a dismal failure. Do you want to see our country become like Greece, Italy, Portugal, or even Great Britain?

What do you mean by "divisive, with no liberty or justice for anyone?"

Socialism uses the illusion of offering fairness and justice for everyone by redistributing the wealth of the nation; picking and choosing winners and losers. This administration has taken over our health care system, given bailouts to the automotive industry, banking industry and energy industry. They support the "Occupy Wall Street" movement of increased taxing of the rich to pay for the welfare of the "less rich." The Constitution never guaranteed equal things—only equal rights and justice. In America we should be FREE TO SUCCEED and FREE TO FAIL!

At this very moment our Constitution is literally going up in flames. What will you do to preserve the Constitution and save America?

Jon McNaughton is an established artist from Utah whose new paintings have attracted the international attention of millions over the last few years. In the 1980s I was a huge Petra fan. Petra was a Contemporary Christian Rock-n-Roll group, that performed music with awesome lyrics some of which were even worthy for a Christian worship Service. For many years John Schlitt was the lead singer for Petra. Schlitt had replaced my then favorite Petra lead singer Greg X. Volz (SA HERE) who went on to a solo career.

Please listen to and watch this very sincere man. You might gain an insight into as to why our Country is in such a terrible mess. Folks, we are all in this together. It's worth a listen; the message is sobering but well put and true. This is short, but a MUST listen.

Thank You for your recent statement calling me and the 60+% of Americans like me: Americans terrorists!

Your recent “non-statement” that you and your boss have vehemently denied through your White House mouth piece Mr. Carney the carnival barker stating that those people who do not share, support, or defend your Marxist Socialist agenda for this country are terrorists. It is refreshing to know that the Executive Branch of OUR federal government is so engaging to the majority of its citizenship. It is comforting to realize that the elected representative values that were created by our Constitution still hold such great value to those whom we call our employees.

In response to your statement I would like to illuminate several historical and contemporary facts that you and your masters and those who share your ideology and agenda have yet to comprehend or dare I say think are not prescient.

You may think that your “Great Society” implementation of  Socialist Marxist programs have sufficiently subverted the Constitution of this Great Republic and its Freedoms guaranteed by its first 10 Amendments’ called the Bill of Rights but as you are now coming to terms with they have not. Since the 1870’s in this country you and what you represent which is progressive socialism have attempted to destroy our “God Given” freedoms as determined by the following statement: “We hold these truth’s to be self-evident that ALL men are created equal and they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these rights are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. These words were preceded in the Declaration of Independence by the following:

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation”.

The men who wrote such eloquent words to break the bonds of an “unclean tyrant” were by a majority of the population of this “colony” also described in similar terms and that was the lesser of what they faced: The Price They Paid

And in retrospect to be included with the following men is truly an honor to which I personally am very undeserving:

The path that you are attempting to steer this Republic down is filled with the pitfalls of your previously failed attempts. The results have been recessions and depressions that you have created and then blamed on others that you have managed to scapegoat. But the Tea Party majority sees through this charade and that is what fosters your rhetoric and response. Your fear is palpable! You and your ilk now face 190 MILLION AMERICANS who no longer believe your lies or the propaganda that your allies in the press expound. Your actions have defined you and there is no hiding the facts that you and the modern “unclean tyrant” you share office with and the minority of supporters that you can call upon, are as exposed as a newborn. You have made the classic mistake of assuming that based on the lack of rebuttal or direct confrontation it is the approval of said action or idea. WRONG!  Just because you honestly believe that when you walk into the room you are the smartest in it, does not make it true.

“You can fool some of the people all of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time” P.T. Barnum.

So if you wish to insist upon this tack please continue because even if your propaganda machine thinks it really is being the 4th. Estate we do not. If you really believe that Honor, Integrity, Fortitude, Responsibility and Valor are forgotten values of what we expect from our elected officials, please, continue to do so. To your own demise!

Your class warfare rhetoric and your attempts to insight social unrest to ferment your opportunity for continued rule will be held into account when the reckoning is held. Your denial of your Oath of Office and the consequences that it brings during this time of war under the War Powers Act will be enforceable. Your arrogance of superiority that you are far better to control our self-determination as guaranteed by the aforementioned documents than the voters of this country is noted. As it was once before:

“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security”.

Your party has been in control of this countries government for 110 of the last 144 years and has been responsible for every single economic down-turn, recession and depression with your attempts and success’ in the desire to create your “progressive dream” of a socialist ruled country with a centrally planned economy.
 
You have failed every single time because this countries (sic) freedoms are as inherent as its soil. Our freedom is organic and existed here long before white men set foot on this soil. It is part and parcel to our DNA and is as needed as the air we breathe and the water we drink.

We are and always have been the continent where freedom of man exists, and you think that because you can enslave a small portion of the population with your entitlements and that you can convince others that what you offer is greater than what you take, all will follow or be intimidated or excoriated into subservience. You think the population of the government educated outreaches the enlightened electorate and your sphere of influence encompasses more than the reality of the truth. Your steadfast adherence to the theory of “telling a lie often enough and it will become the truth” is only effective with those that are motivated by personal self interest and irresponsible gain, if their is nothing in it for them then they will not react.

You really aren’t very smart at all and it is vividly obvious why you and your kind chose public office, you could never sustain that level of incompetence and ignorance in the results oriented private sector.
 
But by all means please feel free to call me a terrorist or racist or whatever derogatory, insidious, vile, despicable negative statement that your small minds can come up with because when I look in the mirror I see a Patriot that is going to stop you and take my Republic back.

Should the U.S. Flag be Banned from Public Schools?

This email has all the looks of chain email. Which it is, but the link below is for real and it is to FOX News. At FOX News is a poll which asks if the American flag should be taken out of Public School. In the email that was sent to me the percentage of people that voted no was only a pathetic 76%. After I voted it was still only about 82%. Friends, this is a pathetic percentage which should be closer to 100%. I say closer because there will be a percentage of American hating Leftists that will make their unpatriotic vote counted. Let we the Patriotic Americans make our voice heard in this unscientific poll, yet important stand to pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America!

UPDATE: Being that this is a chain email I just realized the poll is dated May 6, 2010. So it’s about a year old; nevertheless the poll is still running because the percentage did go from 76% to 82% since I took the poll. Evidently someone is pushing new votes of the Leftist kind to drag the percentages down. Let’s keep those numbers going up.

The leading self-destructive reality in America today is not the sense of entitlement characteristic of recent generations. It is not the fear and dishonesty bred into our voices due to the rise of political correctness and its demand that we abandon the truth in favor of a more “acceptable” outlook.

It is our forgetfulness.

We have forgotten the dauntless spirit and tenacity it took to win the Revolutionary War, World War I, and World War II. Those men had a vision for the future, a pride in American ideals, and a courageous determination to succeed that the young simply don’t understand today. When my grandfather told me that “they just don’t make ‘em like they used to,” he was right. The reason is that we have forgotten the beauty and necessity of that valor and replaced it with a desire to appear noble in the eyes of our enemies, rather than intrepid and unapologetic in our approach to those who aim to destroy us. (P.S.—Terrorism is not a man-made disaster, Mr. President. It is a heinous and unrepentant commitment to murder. The culprits should be treated with as much respect as they showed to our citizens on September 11, 2001.)

We have forgotten the nobility of our Constitution, opting instead to transform it into a “living and breathing” document devoid of the sensibility that led some of the brightest men ever to form the greatest nation ever.

We have forgotten our history and allowed revisionist historians and Ivory Tower academics to distort truths that, if factually recalled, would lead us straight to prosperity. Students are taught to frown upon Reagan’s economic philosophy and to instead glorify FDR and Johnson’s big government programs. There’s only one problem with that. Reaganomics yielded a surge in jobs and national wealth. FDR’s Social Security Act and New Deal, much like Johnson’s Great Society, drained American resources and bred a weakness and dependency into our culture that stripped ambition and personal responsibility from the fabric of many American souls. As I have outlined before, big government programs have never fostered economic growth. There’s no reason to believe they will do so now.

I invite you to do what the current administration would prefer that you don’t. Put your party affiliations aside as you gaze back at our history. Remember what it means to be an American…what it meant to those men who put their lives on the line because they refused to accept “taxation without representation.” Open your eyes to America’s past and it will be your best guide to how to build us a bright future. And do it before it’s too late.
