The Democrat Party of yesteryear, tradition-wise, has always been supportive of Israel. No longer. At its base, this support, for the most part, has always been derived from the shared values inherent within both nations.

As it stands, the Party’s current incarnation (as it moved left-ward, incrementally, over a period of years) is ideologically imbued and invested in Israel’s destruction. America’s, too. This tragic truth is plain for all to see, that is, if one’s eyes are wide open enough to absorb the seismic upheavals taking place all over America.

Indeed, those pulling the strings within the Democrat Party are more than thrilled that domestic terrorists are tearing the nation down. To wit, they lend them more than a wink and a nod. Democrats Keep Pushing to Unravel U.S.–Israel Relationship

New letter from progressives to Pompeo brings harmful ideas to the forefront of American politics – By Steve Postal | July 9, 2020

The Lawfare Project sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a letter opposing progressive Democrats’ “uninformed and inaccurate” policy proposals towards Israel. The Lawfare Project, according to their website, provides legal counsel and services to, and protects the free speech of, members of the Jewish and pro-Israel community. According to the Lawfare Project, the progressive Democrats’ labeling Israel’s plans to establish control over parts of Judea and Samaria as “annexation” rather than “sovereignty” places the Democrats at odds with U.S. law, “which has long recognized the rights of the Jewish people to a national home in Palestine.”

The Lawfare Project’s letter to Speaker Pelosi was in response to another letter sent by progressive Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and others to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in late June. This progressive letter is the latest in a series of Democratic communications that serve to harm the U.S.–Israeli partnership. Democrats are now bringing harmful and false ideas, once considered taboo, to the forefront of American politics. Those ideas are the following:

The “settlements” in Judea and Samaria are illegitimate.

Contrary to popular wisdom, Israel has a right to build the “settlements,” which are Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, the heartland of the Land of Israel. (There are currently about 450,000 Israeli citizens living in Judea and Samaria, in addition to another 215,000 living in eastern Jerusalem.) The Trump administration, in the Pompeo Doctrine, stated that it does not recognize the “settlements” as illegal.

In contrast, the progressive Democrat letter mentioned above calls the “settlements” “illegal” under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Presidential candidate Joe Biden also recently said that continued “settlement” building “will choke off any hope for peace,” despite the Palestinians’ consistent rejection of any peace proposal regardless of the presence, absence, and number of “settlements.”

Israel’s claim to Judea and Samaria is an “occupation.”

Israel’s claim to Judea and Samaria is not one of “occupation,” and Republicans know this. I could not find any reference of the Trump administration referring to the “occupation.” Also, a letter addressed to Netanyahu in support of Israel, signed by 120 House Republicans in late June, does not mention “occupation.”

In contrast, Democrats are convinced otherwise. The progressive Democrat letter mentioned above refers to Judea and Samaria as “occupied Palestinian territory,” “Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967,” and “occupied West Bank,” with Israel being the “Occupying Power.” Biden is also on the record for opposing the so-called “occupation.”

Israel does not have a right to apply sovereignty to at least some of Judea and Samaria.

Israel has a right to apply sovereignty at least some of Judea and Samaria, and Republicans know this. The Trump administration has recognized that right by allowing Israel to apply sovereignty to about 30 percent of Judea and Samaria. The House Republican letter, mentioned above, states that “Israel has the right to make sovereign decisions independent of outside pressure,” and “reaffirm[s] Israel’s right to sovereignty.”

In contrast, Democrats are convinced otherwise. Biden has stated, “I do not support annexation. The fact is, I will reverse Trump’s undercutting of peace.” Further, over 190 House Democrats signed a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Alternate Prime Minister and Defense Minister Benjamin Gantz, and Foreign Minister Gabriel Ashkenazi opposing any Israeli move of “unilateral annexation” to any part of Judea and Samaria. The progressive Democrat letter threatens “nonrecognition of annexed territories.” A letter signed by Senate Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, written to Netanyahu and Gantz in May also opposed “annexation” six times in four paragraphs.

The U.S. should condition aid to Israel on Israel not building in Judea and Samaria.

U.S. aid to Israel dates back to the 1973 Yom Kippur War and is money that Israel spends mostly in the United States. This aid has long been independent of Israel’s relationship with the Palestinians. Continuing this tradition, Biden said that he would not place conditions on military assistance to Israel. But the progressive Democrat letter threatens legislation that would cut U.S. aid to Israel if the latter moves forward with sovereignty. The progressives are thus “subordinating [the U.S.–Israel relationship] to the Palestinians or, more precisely … subordinating it to the extensive demands American progressives make on behalf of the Palestinians.” Bernie Sanders, IfNotNow, and 1,000 alums of J Street U, the student arm of J Street, supported such conditioning of aid to Israel in separate statements.

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is OK.

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is an anti-Semitic campaign to destroy Israel. President Trump signed an executive order, which in part threatens to withhold funding of universities that support BDS. To his credit, Biden “firmly reject[s]” BDS. But the progressive Democrat letter, while it does not expressly address BDS, is endorsed by multiple organizations that support BDS, including American Friends Service Committee, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Churches for Middle East Peace, Defense for Children International — Palestine, and the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights. Each of these organizations is additionally problematic, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon. For example, AMP, Defense for Children International — Palestine and U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights have been connected with fundraising for terrorist organizations. In fact, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez purposefully sought support of the progressive Democrat letter from these groups.

Recent statements by Democrats is the latest in a push to continue to make Israel a partisan wedge in U.S. politics, one that I previously discussed in The American Spectator. It remains to be seen if moderate voices within the Democratic party will be able to reclaim the narrative. Until then, the Democratic party will continue to undermine the U.S.–Israel relationship.

RIOTS AGAIN IN JERUSALEM

In what seems to be a never-ending process, we see Jerusalem once more embroiled with riots and violence. The reason? Two faiths, Judaism and Islam, have holy days, the Muslims demand unfettered access to the Temple Mount, the Jews, in turn, want access to their most sacred sites.

In what is too familiar, the women are the ones at the gates screaming and trying to block any Jews from entering, the Muslim males then react violently when the Israeli police remove the women to give access. Riots started, many times aided by the Jordanian Waqf, the authorities Jordan places on the mount due to a treaty with Israel.

This has gone on since Sharon visited the Temple Mount, the Muslims rioted due to a Jew dared to visit the site, and thus the conflict has continued. To try to ease the problems Israel signed a peace treaty with Jordan, giving Jordan control of the mount, but Israel remains in control of the whole area.

The problem has grown worse since Jordan this year decided in response to Trump recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to hand over 40% of the seats of the Counsel Of Administrators to the “Palestinians,” they, in turn, are now even advocating a more violent resistance.

The new members include the Palestinian Authority’s illegal governor in Jerusalem Adnan al-Husayni; P.A. official Khatem Abdel Kader; controversial Mufti of Jerusalem Muhammad Hussein; President of Al-Quds University in eastern Jerusalem Imad Abu Kishek; and Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, a religious leader with ties to the ruling Turkish regime.

Thus we see far more radical stances due to ties of these people on the council. Adnan Al-Husayni is appointed as governor of all of Jerusalem, but in reality, this is just a political ploy by the Palestinian Authority, he has ZERO political power in the city, it is run and controlled by Israel. This family has a long history of anti-Jewish activities, including Mohammed Amin al-Husseini who later worked with the Fascist, wrote of his intent to bring death camps, or concentration camps to Israel if the Germans won the war.

Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, who is the current Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, is also on the board, this is also a great cause of concern. He has stated that claim of the Temple existed is a fiction, that the mosque has existed on the site for 3,000 years. The problem with this is that the mosque was built in 705 CE, then destroyed and rebuilt in 746 CE, this would put this question as a lie since this was only 1,300 years ago.

Hussein was appointed Mufti by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in 2006 and has a history of making incendiary remarks. Three months after his appointment, Hussein endorsed Palestinian suicide bombings against Israelis, calling the attacks “legitimate resistance.” This past summer, he condemned Israel’s decision to outlaw the Murabitin, an Islamic group whose members often harass non-Muslim visitors at the Temple Mount, saying that Jews will now be allowed to defile al-Aqsa Mosque. His language was echoed by Abbas last month.

In 2015, Hussein laid a wreath at the grave of Haj Amin al-Husseini, a former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and an indicted war criminal and Nazi collaborator who incited deadly riots against Jews in pre-state Israel by spreading false rumors that they threatened Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Imad Abu Kishek is another member, he is a professor of Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, is an administrator, and very active in the Palestinian activities, but to say he has ties to any terrorism, I can not say, I have found no ties to radicals.

There is also Sheikh Ekrima Sabr, who has ties to the Turkish Ruling regime, which brings us back to why Turkey is trying so desperately to gain back control of what they used to have, would also explain their threats towards Israel.

This is the same person that used to be the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, called for Britain and America to be destroyed, in a sermon said:

“Allah, destroy the US, its helpers, and its agents. Allah, destroy Britain, its helpers, and its agents. Allah, prepare those who will unite the Muslims and march in the steps of Saladin.”

He has advocated for children to be suicide bombers, supported their use while Mufti, said the Holocaust was a lie, a Jewish invention, said:

“The Muslim loves death and [strives for] martyrdom”. He has also previously said that: “The younger the martyr – the greater and the more I respect him.”

He also said:

“The Muslim loves death and [strives for] martyrdom.”

In addition to calling for the destruction of America and Britain, he has said Jews are “the most cowardly creatures Allah has ever created”, adding that he is “filled with rage toward the Jews”.

This is what Jordan has put on their board, the farce that they are trying to maintain peace with Israel shows just the opposite. By adding these people to the board, then wondering why the sudden uptick in violence, we see the reaction of Jordan to Trump doing what the law stipulates, the moving of radicals to run things on the Temple Mount.

Jordan has recreated the board, expect things to turn far more violent, may even be pushed to the point that Israel will not find the treaty with Jordan able to be kept due to their interference on the Temple Mount and their own internal affairs.

Adding to this fuel, The Palestinian Authority, who are complaining that they don’t have enough funds, are now promising they are going to increase their “Pay to Slay” payments to families of terrorist, and terrorist sitting in Israeli prisons.

There could be a light at the end of the tunnel, the Saudi’s, who are opening relations with Israel, Israel even sold them Iron Dome to aid in protecting them from Houthi rebels firing rockets at Saudi Arabia, now they are talking about the possibility of the Saudi’s taking over control of the Mount. They have said there should be nothing to prevent the Jews from praying or worshiping on the mount. This would be a change from the Jordanians who have actively encouraged violence against the Jews.

Awakening My Israel Gene

For a writer, knowing you have to write something can be a mixed blessing. The urge to fill a page with gleaming rhetoric and prolific phrases can be quite motivating at times, and yet…there are other times when it can be downright intimidating. It is with much trepidation I begin this piece.

By all accounts there should be a million words rushing forward to describe my first trip to Israel. So much seen and felt, a lifetime of expectations achieved.

As a baby boomer I shared the experience with my fellow boomers of filling coin-cards in Sunday school with a clear understanding of our responsibilities toward the modern Jewish State. Our nickels and dimes would plant forests and help Israel grow and prosper. It was as natural to us as breathing, and we held a vested interest in this historical effort.

So recently when I found myself walking out of the plane and stepped foot on Israeli ground for the first time, I was both emotional and strangely at home; not quite certain what or how to feel. Although waiting in line to get through customs tested my ardor, I remained in a sleep-deprived coma of disbelief that I was actually standing on sacred soil.

It took the entire 70 years or Israel’s existence as a modern country for Norma to finally arrive

When my friend Ari showed up at the airport and we headed to his cousin’s home for Shabbat dinner, it felt so natural I really did not think anything unusual about the evening. Yes, I thought this is Shabbat in an Israeli home, but the table filled with every food you could possibly imagine and the warm entreaties to eat, eat, eat seemed as familiar as the sunshine.

Having the good fortune to have my friend Ari along on my journey made the experience more unique. His American-Israel dual citizenship affords him a perspective I could not achieve. I see and feel American, he both. I gazed at a landscape in Tel Aviv and saw what reminded me of Central Park South, while he saw the IDF GHQ offices in the building where he had served.

Still I waited to feel the explosion of excitement I was certain would arise and overwhelm me, but it was all so normal, it felt odd.

The next morning after I had checked into my hotel in Jerusalem, I began my day with an Israeli breakfast. No lack of calories here. My first response was that I was having one of those diet dreams, as I perused the endless buffet of items from eggs, salads, breads and cheeses to cereals, desserts and pastries as far as the eye could see. Aha, I thought, thank Goodness I brought elastic waist pants along.

After I had ingested enough calories to sustain me for a month, I headed for the Old City and the Western Wall, or as I continued to refer to it from my childhood, the Wailing Wall. I was corrected many times by Ari who reminded me we are not “wailing” any longer, thus the name no longer applies. Yet feeling certain I would be wailing at the wall, the moniker felt appropriate.

I traversed cobblestone streets past endless cubicles filled with Jewish and Christian paraphernalia, as Arab merchants shouted pleas to enter and buy and then insults when I did not comply with their wishes.

I wandered until suddenly in front of my eyes was a flight of steps leading to the Wall. I numbly moved ahead uncertain how or if I would feel.

Standing at the top of the steps leading down to the wall is a panoramic view that is at once breathtaking and quite surreal. Is it real or a picture? Am I really here or simply watching a video taken by a friend who had previously visited?

I descended at a snail’s pace, staring at the wall, waiting for the emotional rush I had always expected and envisioned, but instead there was numbness, almost disbelief akin to shock.

I grew closer. When I got to the wall I placed my hand upon the ancient stone expecting a charge of electricity; still nothing. I prayed and attempted to place my prayer into the overflowing crevices in the wall, then backed away dropping down onto one of the chairs. I stared for some time then walked up and prayed again. It was very hot and I was feeling grateful to be in the shade when suddenly a river of emotion washed over me. I fought it back, afraid I might flood the entire area with a river of tears.

This is how I managed my emotions the entire trip, holding back tears refusing to go to a place so deep inside it might overwhelm and consume me totally.

At the Wall my friend Chaya met me to take me to her home for Shabbat lunch. She and her husband Ronnie had made Aliyah to Israel over 14 years before. Walking in the Old City like a Jewish mountain goat and arriving alive without suffering a heart attack from what seemed like thousands of steps and hills seemed like a miracle, but of course I was in the place where they happen regularly, so why be surprised?

Sharing an incredible Shabbat meal with friends as though no time at all had passed, I felt blessed. I was feeling blessed every minute, every second I was there. Yes, there is a lot of food, we are Jewish, it is who we are so get over it.

I did not absorb all the emotion until I returned home and finally allowed myself to open the floodgates. Being there and close to tears most of the time, I needed to process what I felt.

Was it that I was a Jew coming home at last?

 Was it walking through Yad Vashem and channeling the cries and pain of my grandmother and aunt in the camps or wading gleefully in the Dead Sea?

At the Dead (“Salt”) Sea “I am healed!”

Was it standing on a mountain overlooking the ancient city of Jericho that Joshua had fought to capture, but now had been given away so we could no longer enter without risking our lives?

Was it a sense of pride gazing over palm trees and orchards at what my people had created in a desert?

Or the sight of Jerusalem from Mt. Scopus? Swelling with emotion and pride and a tie to the past that tugs at one’s heart so profoundly?

Our visit to a solar company creating products to light and modernize Africa?

Was it a sense of loss for everything that had gone before and those with whom I could never share this joyous moment?

Was it how amazing it felt to see my Christian friends tearful and overcome with emotion as they experienced the Jewish State?

Or finally understanding why there is a battle for Israel that raises such enormous emotional levels in people throughout the world?

Perhaps it was simply that inside us all there is an Israel gene lying dormant to be truly awakened when we step foot on its land. A land where history disappears and we meander through Biblical times as easily as Moses or Jesus who return to stroll beside us.

We all felt, we all shed tears, we all knew we were in a blessed place. No matter Jewish or Christian, we shared a unique bond recognizing what we were witnessing and experiencing.

Israel is real. Trite to say perhaps, but also the most real we may ever feel. Emotions are heightened and there is vibrancy, a special lens through which our eyes see brighter, clearer and enhanced somehow.

I feel especially lucky to have been able to witness that it is not just a Jewish feeling, but transcends and encompasses the human race in its entirety. The Judeo-Christian world sharing this special time with wonderful new friends from all over the world like Pucci from Manila, Monique from Jakarta, Chris now living and working in Israel, Margaret from Kenya or Sylvia from Spain; everyone on the trip felt the same emotions. Fellow travelers so anxious to engage about their own personal Israel experience.

That magnetic pull of history, an ancient legacy of love, hate, war, peace and hope. We all belong to the State of Israel and the State of Israel belongs in us all.

The Jewish people inherited the right to guard and protect its borders, to defend our homeland - this amazing paradise - from invading armies as we have done so throughout our history and will continue. Seeing soldiers with innocent young faces armed and prepared to give their lives for this ancient and charismatic land saddens and warms us at once.

It is our charge and our destiny, one the Jewish people embrace with joy and rapture.

We do not visit Israel; we all go home to Israel. Once you understand this, you really never leave her borders.

And may we all say, “Next Year in Jerusalem!”
