I found this Tom Trento “Micro-Series” on Dr. Rich Swier’s blog of the same name. The title is ‘Grover Norquist: The Wizard of K Street — “The LOVE of Money is the Root of all EVIL”’ I sent it to myself to examine some time ago. My email inbox tells me I sent this on May 6, 2014; however the Trento article is dated April 30, 2014. So I am a bit behind the curve in getting to it. Nevertheless, I find it so interesting I feel compelled to share it in a cross post anyway. The Swier blog post only has the first micro-movie in the Tom Trento Micro-Series that exposes Grover Norquist as not a friend of Conservatives even though Norquist represents himself as a Republican lobbyist. Somehow and I don’t recall how, I found all the Youtube links at a now discontinued Trento website known as The United West that has all seven Micro-Series videos. Of which Trento adds a number eight which are actually three links to a CBS expose of Jack Abramoff as a corrupt lobbyist that has been convicted. I include those three links below seven Micro-Series Youtube videos.

WHY DID YOU SELECT GROVER NORQUIST TO EXPOSE AS A BAD GUY?

That’s easy! If half of what has been written and discovered about Grover is true than this guy is clearly an ideological enemy of the state and NOT the Republican savior that many believe. Therefore, he must be de-legitimized before his various Boards and completely rejected by the dopey politicians who are beholden to him for their political careers.

IF NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO DISLODGE GROVER’S DEEP ROOTS OF INFLUENCE IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN?

The way we see it, if we are able to disrupt, disable or destroy Grover’s influence operation in America, the country is better off. But if we are not than we will have tons of material for our “edutainment” programs where we educate through entertainment. And what better subject for ridicule than a short-fat-bearded man who loves guns almost as much as he loves money, idolizes terrorists and is probably a “secret” Muslim, collects “Grover” dolls and has a black-board-screechy speaking voice that ought to be used at GITMO to torture terrorists!

The health care system in America is broken. Costs are rising at an unacceptable rate—more than doubling over the last 10 years, which is nearly four times the rate of wage growth. Too many patients feel trapped by health care decisions dictated by insurers and HMOs. Too many doctors are torn between practicing medicine and practicing insurance. And some 47 million Americans worry what will happen to them or their children if they get sick.

As a physician, I am keenly aware that our country needs health care reform. I support comprehensive reform which would enable every American to enjoy health coverage, lower costs, increase patient choice, improve access and quality, and protect the patient-physician relationship.

Universal access to high quality health care is possible, and Americans are justified to expect it. We have the best doctors in the world…the best scientists in the world… the best hospitals in the world. Now America needs to build the best health care in the world. We need to empower patients, and reduce the power of government and insurance bureaucrats. Every American should be able to get the care they need.

We will move closest to this goal when we promote the same innovation and competition in health care that we see in every other American industry. America should achieve universal access in a way that puts individual Americans in charge of their own health care decisions. We need American solutions.

In May 2009, I introduced my own health care reform solution, the Patients’ Choice Act (S. 1099) which would accomplish these goals. The Patients’ Choice Act would put individuals in charge of their health care decisions and would increase access, affordability, and choice of health care plans. This proposal is a clear market-based reform that seeks to strengthen the relationship between the patient and the doctor.

Let me briefly to highlight a few points:

• Americans save more money. The Patients’ Choice Act equalizes the tax treatment of health insurance and enables every American to buy health insurance with a tax credit, regardless of employment status, age, health condition or the resources to purchase health insurance. This means that about nine in 10 American households would see a tax cut, and for patients and families making under $250,000 annually, their health insurance premium costs would generally be lower. Employers would still be able to deduct from their taxes the cost of providing health insurance to their employees, but millions of Americans who do not currently receive health insurance would have real buying power.

• States offer solutions. The Patients’ Choice Act incentivizes states to establish State Exchanges, which would offer high-quality, affordable health insurance to all individuals, regardless of their employment status, age, health condition, or pre-existing conditions. Health insurance plans sold in a State Exchange would offer the high-quality health plans like Members of Congress receive.

• Seniors fare better. The Patients’ Choice Act protects seniors. Unlike some proposals being considered in Congress, my plan is not financed by arbitrary and drastic cuts to Medicare. As a practicing physician, I know how many seniors rely on Medicare and I am committed to reforming Medicare. My plan would significantly reduce the high rate of Medicare fraud compared to today’s practices. This policy change alone would improve Medicare’s solvency, ensure taxpayer dollars are not wasted, and help us keep our commitment to America’s seniors. My plan would also improve competition and value under Medicare Advantage, and allow seniors making healthy decisions to save more.

• No new spending, no new taxes. According to our estimates Patients’ Choice Act does not require new spending or new taxes. It is my intent to address our health care crisis my fixing incentivizes in the system and reallocating existing money. Americans already spend $2.4 trillion a year on health care, which means that we need to figure out ways to spend our health care dollars more effectively instead of drastically increasing spending. In fact, one independent estimate said my bill could save taxpayers $70 billion and ensure a majority of currently uninsured Americans.

• Transforms Medicaid to provide real coverage and care. The Patients’ Choice Act transforms Medicaid by building upon the innovations we have seen in a number of states. My plan would integrates low-income families with dependent children into higher quality private plans through a tax credit and direct financial assistance. Keeping families together within one provider network will foster coordinated, personalized care and promote innovative patient care models such as medical homes. My plan also maintains current law for benefit security and stable funding for individuals with disabilities but enables better care management. This would improve the health coverage and care for about 45 million Americans, and save taxpayers about $260 billion. States would save a lot as well: about $960 billion over 10 years!

• Invests in prevention and wellness. The Patients’ Choice Act invests in prevention and wellness for all Americans. Currently, five preventable chronic diseases cause two-thirds of American deaths and consume 75 percent of our total health expenditures each year. These chronic diseases are largely preventable. My plan’s investment in public health and disease prevention will help reduce health care costs and improve the quality of Americans’ lives.

• Less government control and no government-run plan. The Patients’ Choice Act increases patient control and decreases government control. I strongly oppose the creation of any new government-run health care plan. A government-run program would only compound existing problems, by giving taxpayer dollars to Washington bureaucrats who would wield undue control over Americans’ health care decisions. A new government health care plan would also mean that millions of Americans would lose their current health care. Furthermore, socialized governmental systems stay afloat by rationing care and letting people die before their time. Numerous studies, reports, and media have shown that necessary medical procedures are delayed far too long in countries where there is socialized medicine. A government-run plan is not the answer. A government-run plan would unfortunately operate with the compassion of the IRS and the efficiency of the federal Katrina response. It will not meet the basic needs of our citizens, reduce costs or improve outcomes, so I will continue to oppose it.

All Americans should have the ability to make their own health care decisions, see the doctor they want, and get the care they need. As a practicing physician and two-time cancer survivor, I support targeted, sensible health care reform which builds on what works and fixes what is broken. I will fight for solutions that strengthen the relationship between patients and doctors, solutions that put patients –not Washington bureaucrats – in charge of their health care decisions and provide common-sense solutions to our nation’s health care crisis. (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Ranking Member Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK), Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE), Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI) and Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Ranking Member John McCain (R-AZ), released the findings of a two year investigation into a case study of abuses surrounding the approval process of Social Security Disability benefits.  The report, entitled, “How Some Legal, Medical, and Judicial Professionals Abused Social Security Disability Programs for the Country’s Most Vulnerable: A Case Study of the Conn Law Firm,” details inappropriate conduct and collusion between a law firm, Social Security Law Judges and doctors in approving benefits, while outlining the inept agency oversight which allowed the misconduct to take place for years.

 The investigation was led by Senator Coburn.  The first year of the investigation was conducted by the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations when Senator Coburn was the Ranking Member there, prior to his becoming the Ranking Member of the full Committee.  The Committee will hold a hearing today featuring the report entitled: “Social Security Disability Benefits:  Did A Group of Judges, Doctors and Lawyers Abuse Programs for the Country’s Most Vulnerable?” on Monday, October 7, 2013, at 3 p.m. EST in room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.  The hearing will be broadcast on CSPAN 3.  

       

 “This report highlights the very problems Congress needs to focus on but too often ignores.  In just two years, the Social Security Disability Trust Fund could be depleted.  That means millions of disabled Americans will face benefit cuts while every American could see an increase in their payroll taxes.  That is unacceptable.  What is also outrageous, as this report details, is how well-heeled and well-connected lawyers, doctors, and judges have gamed the system for their own benefit.  Every bogus claim made on behalf of someone who is not truly disabled robs taxpayers and denies or delays benefits for someone who is truly disabled.  This is an enormous and urgent problem that should demand our immediate attention,” Ranking Member Coburn said, noting that a previous report on the disability program showed at least more than 25 percent of 300 disability cases reviewed contained errors or poor quality analysis.

Obama orders government to prepare for impact of global warming

President Obama issued an executive order Friday directing a government-wide effort to boost preparation in states and local communities for the impact of global warming.

The action orders federal agencies to work with states to build “resilience” against major storms and other weather extremes. For example, the president’s order directs that infrastructure projects like bridges and flood control take into consideration climate conditions of the future, which might require building structures larger or stronger — and likely at a higher price tag.

“The impacts of climate change — including an increase in prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures, more heavy downpours, an increase in wildfires, more severe droughts, permafrost thawing, ocean acidification and sea-level rise — are already affecting communities, natural resources, ecosystems, economies and public health across the nation,” the presidential order said. “The federal government must build on recent progress and pursue new strategies to improve the nation’s preparedness and resilience.”

$4.2 million in tax incentives brings Whole Foods to depressed downtown Detroit

Michigan politicians met in downtown Detroit on May 14 to break ground on a new Whole Foods Market with hopes of boosting the area’s economy and bringing new jobs to the city.

The new store is said to be part of an incentive package that includes $4.2 million in state and local funds. The store will receive tax credits and promise to remain open for seven years after receiving the first installment, Spero News reported.

Michigan Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Detroit Democratic Mayor Dave Bing joined Whole Foods co-chief executive Walter Robb at the groundbreaking.

Proponents of the project are hoping that the market will create what they refer to as the “Whole Foods Effect,” where real estate values increase in areas where stores put down roots.

The store will create at least 60 jobs. Retailers nearby are hoping that the Whole Foods will encourage shoppers to remain in the area after dark.

The mid-town Detroit Whole Foods is scheduled to open in 2013.

Though no major policy decisions are expected from the Group of Eight summit, leaders hope they can bridge enough of their differences to soothe rattled financial markets after worries about the risk of a Greek exit from the euro zone sent European stock prices to their lowest level since December.

"Hopefully we'll get some stuff done," Obama told Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti as he and other summit participants arrived for Friday evening dinner at a lodge at the secluded presidential retreat.

Obama earlier in the day aligned himself with Monti and new French President Francois Hollande by urging a solution to the euro zone crisis that combines fiscal belt-tightening measures with a "strong growth agenda."

On the other side of the debate is German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has pushed fiscal austerity as a means of bringing down huge debt levels that are burdening European economies.  (Read More)

Austerity measures won't save Europe but loose monetary policies will, writes Nobel economist Paul Krugman.

The European Union and the International Monetary Fund have made over $170 billion in rescue funding available to Greece provided the country agrees to belt-tightening measures like spending cuts and public-sector layoffs.

The result, the Greek economy remains mired in recession and anger on the rise, as evidenced by recent parliamentary elections that thrust leftist political parties into power vowing to ditch austerity policies even if it means abandoning the currency zone, which could disrupt the European economy if the larger Italy and Spain follow suit.

While austerity won't solve the problem, looser monetary policies on the part of the European Central Bank will, Krugman writes is New York Times column.

Inflation may rise, but that's better than risking economic collapse for much of the continent.

Norquist, Lott Eviscerate NYT's Paul Krugman in New Stimulus Exposé

Grover Norquist and John Lott, Jr. lay waste to the economic claims of Obama-backer, stimulus defender, and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman in their new, hard-hitting book, Debacle: Obama’s War on Jobs and Growth and What We Can Do Now to Regain Our Future. 

Grover Norquist, who is the President of Americans for Tax Reform, and economist John Lott marshal a mountain of economic data that reveal that, contrary to Krugman’s Keynesian claims, President Obama’s 2009 stimulus plan has made the American economy worse, not better.

Their refutation makes for fascinating and sometimes humorous reading.

Consider, for example, the prediction Krugman made the day Obama signed the original stimulus bill into law:  “I am still guessing that we peak out at around 9% [unemployment] and that would be late this year [2009]." Furthermore, Krugman declared that double-digit unemployment was “not the most likely event.” As Norquist and Lott note, unemployment hit 10.1% and remained above 9% two years after Krugman predicted it would peak.

Once it became clear that President Obama’s stimulus plan had failed to ignite the economic recovery he promised, Krugman and others began scrambling for excuses to explain why Obama’s spending spree hadn’t worked. One explanation Krugman offered was that right-wingers had erroneously claimed government spending had increased when it hadn’t:

So as I said, the big government expansion everyone talks about never happened....And federal aid to state and local governments wasn’t enough to make up for plunging tax receipts in the face of the economic slump....[T]here’s a widespread perception that government spending has surged, when it hasn’t—is that there has been a disinformation campaign from the right, based on the usual combination of fact-free assertions and cooked numbers.

As Norquist and Lott reveal, Krugman’s claims rely on a slippery game of sleight of hand; Krugman cherry-picks the only year when total government spending dropped, which was from 2009 to 2010, “and even then, it was still much higher than just a couple of years earlier.”  In point of fact, note the authors, government spending has grown 12 percent since 2008 and 20 percent since 2007.

In one of the more outrageous examples of Paul Krugman’s Keynesian illogic, Norquist and Lott showcase the New York Times columnist’s bizarre contention that an alien space invasion could help stimulate America’s floundering economy:

Paul Krugman: If we discovered that space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months. And then if we discovered, oops, we made a mistake, there aren’t any aliens, we’d be better off.

“Would we really be better off paying workers to dig ditches and then fill them back up?” write Norquist and Lott sardonically. “Or, how about paying people to build massive defenses against imaginary space aliens?"

Debacle also brings in Krugman’s contention that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an economic winner for America for a well-earned drubbing:

Krugman also thought that the 9/11 attacks “could even do some economic good” by stimulating the economy because “all of a sudden, we need some new office buildings” and “rebuilding will generate at least some increase in business spending.”  Unfortunately, this is the cornerstone of Obama’s Stimulus program. The examples also highlight how inconsistently these arguments are used by the president and his defenders. The 9/11 attacks or natural disasters in the United States were supposedly beneficial for the U.S. economy because they increase spending, but the earthquake in Japan was detrimental.

Claim after claim, Grover Norquist and John Lott offer numerous data-laden refutations to Paul Krugman’s myriad Keynesian claims. It would all be humorous were it not for the fact that Krugman’s big spending philosophy forms the intellectual foundation of Barack Obama’s economic policies.

The result: the Obama economy has been an unmitigated debacle.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Are Republican lawmakers deliberately stalling the economic recovery to hurt President Barack Obama’s re-election chances? Some top Democrats say yes, pointing to GOP stances on the debt limit and other issues that they claim are causing unnecessary economic anxiety and retarding growth.

The latest Democratic complaint came after House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that when Congress raises the nation’s borrowing cap in early 2013, he will again insist on big spending cuts to offset the increase. Boehner, R-Ohio, continues to reject higher tax rates, which Democrats demand from the wealthy.

That led Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to say Boehner is virtually assuring another debt-ceiling crisis as bad or worse than the one that shook financial markets nine months ago.

“The last thing the country needs is a rerun of last summer’s debacle that nearly brought down our economy,” Schumer said in a statement. In an interview, Schumer added: “I hope that the speaker is not doing this because he doesn’t want to see the economy improve, because what he said will certainly rattle the markets.”

Boehner responded in a statement: “Republicans have passed nearly 30 bills that would help small businesses create jobs and we are waiting on Senate Democrats to vote on these common-sense measures. The failure to act on these jobs bills, as well as our crushing debt burden, is undermining economic growth and job creation.” (Read more)
