On the Path of Dissolution and Civil War - The Democrats' Extreme and Lawless Trajectory Towards Civil War

America is in crisis more than our country has ever been, since the 1850s and much worse than the 1960s, and most of the Freedom-loving Conservative and Independent Americans recognize the Biden regime's willingness to break the Constitution and act lawlessly, with horror and disgust, along with his high-handed tyrannical edicts and mandates declared with nothing more than a wink and a nod, for what they represent. Here is a regime that embraces and advocates for the new "Wokeism" and the rising Marxist-Maoist Cancel-Culture, and taken together this is an existential threat to the nation on the whole, to the Republic and to Freedom and Liberty and all we hold dear.

 

Many philosophical pundits are certain that this is a blip and suggest Freedom-loving Americans are already turning the tide against the growing trend towards tyranny in our country. They erroneously suggest compromises are still in the offing and possible between the Democratic Party Communists and Conservative America, but they couldn't be more wrong: Both ideologies are totally antithetical to one another, and the Democrats have made it plain that they seek nothing less than the eradication of our nation's founding, essentially the erasure of America's Christian and Western principles, as a weird, despicable and dangerous sort of **anocracy seems to be running the nation today.

The Biden regime, and so too the Marxist-Maoist component of his party, are in the driver's seat pressing the fight against everything good, decent and moral that America was built upon: the idea of a core nuclear family comprised of one biological man and one woman and their children and the sanctity of marriage;  border security, national sovereignty and legal immigration; honor and God and Scripture, as they work overtime to squash America's best concepts. And this makes common ground to be found by the Marxists and Conservatives and Independents something as scarce as unicorns.

 

A nation cannot stand without shared beliefs between its people, regarding their societal identity and those ideas and principles they view as the best for one's guidance through life. It must have shared traditions, because without them the society is undermined by a consistent confusion and cacophony of competing ideas supported by different groups and tribes for one pet special interest after another; and, if not rectified, this leads countries into eventual chaos and dissolution.

 

This is the path America is on: Dissolution and civil war.

 

This was virtually ensured by the Democratic Party, as they have promoted and passed one anti-American piece of legislation after another and followed anti-American policies for decades, always pressing Congress and the public for more open and porous borders and a lax immigration system. They closed Ellis Island in 1954, which was the place where immigration officials would identify and reject the Communists, Fascists, Left-leaning anarchists and nihilists. As if that wasn't enough, with the strong backing of Senator Ted Kennedy and his Globalist-Communist buddies, they passed the Immigration Act of 1965, purposefully choosing to completely ignore the fact, that many cultures held a worldview totally antithetical to ours and did not value or respect our American principles and virtues.

 

Compounding the problem, subsequent Democrat led administrations refused to facilitate and insist new immigrants fully assimilate to American norms and traditional culture, in a manner that supplants our inalienable God-given rights for group identity. Instead, they allowed for mini-states representing a patchwork of the globe to spring up throughout the country, some with very little loyalty to America. And then there are those immigrants, legal and illegal, who still to this day embrace Big Government solutions and the idea the state is sovereign and the citizens are subjects; and as such, they are very receptive to the rise of the Marxist-Maoist Cancel-Culture regime in America.

 

To put it in stark terms in the manner many Conservative Americans now see the problem, and taking a few liberties from the words of Jean Raspail as written in 'The Camp of Saints':

 

"In one sense, (America) is more than ever triumphant, but it has a conception of the rights of man. In its original form this was an excellent idea, but it has now been misapplied and it's being used against (America) ... (continuing with one protagonist, Professor Clagues, as he confronts an invader) ... I too have stopped thinking and just want to tell you where I stand" -- and with that he fires his weapon and turns his back on the corpse to return inside his home.

 

Worse, much of today's anti-American sentiment has been done through our nation's public education system, from the 1960s to the present, through the many untold numbers of Communist mouthpieces who infiltrated it, now advocating the Critical Race Theory and racism directed at White America. Included in their anti-American mantra are assertions that America is an imperialistic racist nation that was built by people of color, as they use colonialism and the notion of cultural appropriation to plant the seeds of hatred for America in the minds of the youth who were born and raised here. They've overstepped their duties in the most egregious of manners, as they now attempt to teach America's children that no child should want to be an American, and that is criminal and beyond unconscionable, in my book.

 

These "educators" seek to make our youth forever feel guilty for the "crimes" of their ancestors, however real or imagined the "crimes" might be, with the degree of one's guilt to be determined by the amount of color in one's skin. They seek to institutionalize a perpetual class of victims and oppressors.

 

Today, the Biden regime and his Marxist-Maoist supporters scapegoat White America, and we especially saw this as the statues of our American heroes and our monuments and churches were attacked and defaced and often destroyed by Black Lives Matter and Antifa in recent years. We see this dynamic playing out in Biden's Open Border Policy and his refusal to stop the flood of Illegal Aliens -- future Democrats -- into the country. And it's obvious in every other Biden regime policy, as the Democratic Party Communists move to "transform" America, by debilitating our ability to produce energy through "dirty" fossil fuels and simultaneously demanding the redistribution of wealth, while Biden and his red, radical Globalist-Commies portray the American family, our national heritage, market commerce and our civic and religious institutions as corrupt, reprobate and immoral -- the very things representative of their party -- because, for the most part, White heterosexual men played the largest part in building and maintaining them.

 

In the name of "equality" and to further advance their Marxist-Maoist agenda, America bears witness to a new economic model paid for by the taxpayers, 'til they either can't pay any longer or they bleed tears of frustration, as the merit of one's ability and workmanship is reduced to nothingness and incompetence is rewarded and competence is handicapped. And rather than respecting all men and women through the prism of equality-in-the-eyes-of-the-law, the Biden Commies are moving to expand government over any expansion of Freedom and Individual Liberties, while they attempt to spend the nation into oblivion over the next three years, making all Americans equal in their shared economic misery at the lowest common denominator in poverty.

 

This is the Biden regime's concept of the government facilitating "inclusiveness" for the people, in a perverse fashion that calls good "evil" and evil "good". Satan himself couldn't ask for better.

 

Our beloved America's enemies want everybody to believe that America has been inherently and completely evil across its history. They want us to see our heterosexual Biblically ordained family as the deviancy and reject our "homophobic" churches to latch onto their heretical churches that bastardize the Word of God through their moral relativisms, false interpretations and outright lies. They call our entire way of life and the institutions we have built, including our educational institutions, "systemically racist" along with many corporations that aren't fully in agreement with their Marxist-Maoist Cancel-Culture model of governance, and they demand that we renounce it all, before we can once more be a fully functioning, participating member of the new society they are creating, a dismal dystopian society without forgiveness in which self-hatred is the premier principle.

 

And for those so inclined, one's guilt may be absolved for the exorbitant price of betraying America, sacrificing the nation and the three branches of government and all their subsidiaries that use to make it possible to live Free with some good bit of Individual Liberty to call our own, sacrificing our Freedom and Liberties in fact.

 

As Samuel Adams, one of America's Founders, once noted:

 

"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties  of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. How necessary then is it for those who are determined to transmit the Blessings of Liberty as a fair Inheritance to Posterity, to associate on publick Principles in Support of publick virtue .... and Nothing but opposite Principles and Manners can overthrow it." We are no longer a Free country, not when elected and appointed government officials can simply declare a thing to be so, such as "Everyone shall wear masks -- everyone shall take the Covid-19 vaccine", and their subordinates impose those "mandates" as though they are law. We aren't Free, when our government continues to try to keep a "state of emergency" ongoing, in order to manipulate it, so the government can retain power and control over the American people.

 

Two weeks to flatten the curve of the Covid virus has turned into two years and counting and the tyrants speculating over "new variants", while now considering the possibilities of continuing the same failed lockdown policies for those variants that failed so miserably and caused so much economic destruction, as if the American people are that stupid or even willing to fall for that mess again. We've seen their hypocrisy, as the likes of Gavin Newsom, Nancy Pelosi and Stacey Abrams and others have partied and gone about their lives maskless and nonchalantly while demanding everyone else comply with their asinine, unscientific illegal and illegitimate diktats.

 

Wouldn't Biden and his gang of traitors love an America where everyone would receive massive fines for not wearing their mask everyday, inside and out, using micro-chips in the masks that would match to the wearer and identify the "criminals" amongst us?

 

While America snoozed and was entertained by Hollywood, the Woke Biden regime caught much of America unaware and off-guard, to the point that every single core Freedom we held most dear was stripped away from us overnight, as Corporate Nazis complied with the Biden mandates even before they were fully reviewed and resolved by the Court, continuing to do so at this moment, and other good little amerikkans among us in the private sector have made sure to single out violators for punishment and cancellation. Our words must be nuanced for fear of being canceled by our work -- for any who are truly worried over such an eventuality, and our less brave citizens are pressured to acknowledge the false rectitude of ideas antithetical to our own, while books that contradict the false science of the CDC and Faucism with empirical findings and logic are blacklisted by certain publishers, such as Amazon, and others are pulled from circulation.

 

Whatever the case, complacency, a too-busy life, or apathy, Conservative America allowed the void in many segments of society and in every government institution to be filled by Communists and other radicals along the way. So much so did this occur that the Marxists and Maoists currently dominate America's culture on all the important fronts, in the entertainment industry, academia and the mainstream media, which is making for an uphill battle at the moment. The longer this remains the status quo in our country the more any future Conservative victories will ring hollow and the Marxists will strike with more extreme reprisals and increased plundering of the U.S. Treasury, until every last vestige of America's traditional culture is destroyed. 

 

It's a hard thing to fully comprehend, but incredibly, there are millions of Americans who have accepted the fallacies and outright lies of the Biden regime as their New Gospel, and unfortunately they are the useful idiots, the Brown Shirted foot-soldiers, who are excited and ecstatic to surrender to the Democratic Party Communists' authoritarian/totalitarian rule, for a continuation of Government freebees and the bread and circuses, no matter that any disobedience might one day mean their end at the end of a rope or a rifle.

 

The longer the Marxist-Maoists, the Biden regime and any subsequent tyrants push Americans along this current extreme and lawless trajectory the more a civil war becomes more certain, since what they demand contains no common ground or areas for compromise and is the bridge too far for most Americans who love everything about America, even Her flaws which were overcome and rectified by good men and women who transformed Her into a Shining City on the Hill, so exceptional and so wonderful -- a beacon of Liberty and Freedom to all, 'til now.

 

It's simply a question now of how soon or distant is the time that the fight is finally forced upon the principled Freedom-loving Americans. Upon its arrival, let us fight to win so that future generations may live Free, and let history note we were men and women of honor who did not flinch or give any quarter to the tyrants in the face of death.

Be very alert my fellow Conservative Americans!

I’m on the email list of Israpundit. Israpundit is a Pro-Israel blog founded and operated by Ted Belman. Israpundit does a lot of the same thing I do in cross posting interesting content from other sources. My Israpundit email list for 8/25/19 had the title “Who Is Antifa?” by Ray DiLorenzo of “STAND UP AMERICA” listed fifth. With all the Antifa violence going on, especially in Portland Oregon, the title piqued my interest.

Before I followed through with a cross post myself, I thought I’d do a little checking into Stand Up America. So I Googled it (Yeah I know, I should have Duck Duck Go’d it). I typed in “Stand Up America” and went to the first entry on the Google search engine. I was stunned!

The page loading from https://www.standupamerica.com/ is the word “RESIST” in large bold caps. Realizing these days that “RESIST” is the mantra of the Dems to all things relating to the Trump Administration, I warily scrolled down. Here are the words that greeted my curiosity:

“WE ARE STAND UP AMERICA

After the 2016 election, millions of progressives came together in the Stand Up America community to resist Trump’s dangerous agenda. We’re now focusing our efforts on standing up to the Trump administration’s corruption and strengthening our democracy across the country. We’re committed to providing you with the information you need to take timely, impactful action and make your voice heard.”

I thought, “WHAT?!” That description didn’t sound like a website that would expose Antifa but rather a website that would promote Antifa ideology. So I went to the website’s About Page for further clarification:

“WHAT WE DO — AND WHY WE DO IT:

Stand Up America began in the weeks after the 2016 election, when hundreds of thousands of concerned Americans came together online to organize and resist Trump’s dangerous agenda. Our community has quickly grown to over two million Americans, across all 50 states, who are taking action and making their voices heard daily.

We’re focused on advocating for an immediate impeachment inquiry to air the evidence of Trump’s crimes, standing up to his administration’s corruption, and strengthening our democracy across the country.

The Stand Up America team is here to provide you with the information and resources you need to take meaningful action. My God! Stand Up America sounds like a hate America-hate Trump Antifa sympathetic website. That couldn’t possibly be the folks Israpundit was cross posting to expose the Communist background of anti-American ideals of Antifa, right?

So I came to my senses and Duck Duck Go’d “Stand Up America” coupled with the author of the Israpundit exposé post’s name - Ray DiLorenzo.

And Shazam! I discovered DiLorenzo’s name was associated with another “Stand Up America.” To be precise though, the name is “STAND UP AMERICA US FOUNDATION.” And the URL is “http://www.standupamericaus.org/sua/”. The key being evil “Stand Up America” is a dot-com and good “Stand Up America” is a dot-org.

Stand Up America US’s About Page promotes the American principles of the U.S. Republic the Founding Fathers would have been proud. And NOT the concepts of “Democracy” that would have Founders churning in their graves:

Antifaschistische Aktion, abbreviated as Antifa or anti-fascist, was an organization affiliated with the Communist Party of Germany that existed from 1932 to 1933. In the postwar era the historical organization inspired new groups and networks, known as the wider Antifa movement, many of which use the aesthetics of the historical Antifaschistische Aktion, especially a modified version of its logo. There is much confusion as to who Antifa is, and what they stand for. First, let’s define fascism that they say they are against: Fascism is a set of political beliefs that includes strong control of society and the economy by the state, and the halting of any resistance. In a fascist nation, private enterprise would continue, but all private commercial endeavors would be heavily controlled by the state. Examples would be Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy.

In a Communist society, all means of production would be owned and controlled by the state. Communism is theoretically classless and egalitarian. In reality, the ruling class always does very well. Examples would be the former Soviet Union, Communist China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea. All have had to introduce some form of capitalism to survive, some more than others. There are no pure Marxist systems in existence today. It simply does not work.

Hitler expelled the Communists from Germany in the early thirties as they were stealing his thunder and his voice. The Fuhrer was very impressed with Mussolini’s fascism and how effective it was, hence the fascist/Nazi alignment during World War II. These deported German Communists hit the U.S. college circuit, joining every major university, until they have now almost completely taken over our education system.

Fascism and Communism are not opposite ends of the spectrum, rather, they are first cousins on the left. Both are secular socialist with power being absolute with no opposition tolerated, especially from God. No natural rights, only that which they choose to dispense.

On Monday, a disenchanted former Antifa member was interviewed on Fox News. He was as confused as so many others. He called Antifa the real fascists. No, they are not fascists. Antifa was and is primarily a global Communist movement using fascist tactics…breaking up meetings, rallies, destroying property, clubbing a few people, etc. They use the moniker ‘anti-fascist’ to keep you confused with no idea as to their real intentions. Democrats don’t speak out because they are close relations…the militant wing of the party doing the dirty work, but keeping enough space between them to distract you. Democrats are not strangers to militant wings, hence the KKK.

They both have all the earmarks of beginning as organized crime. If someone wants free stuff from the government, they vote or support those that promise it. The money is taken from those that do work (oppressors) and gives it to those who won’t work (the oppressed). It’s a social & political contract. Give me power, I give you free stuff and will protect your receivership. Of course, if you give them enough power you will eventually no longer have a vote or a choice in the matter or even the free stuff.

Democrats love to promise what they know is impossible just to sit back and watch the Republicans say no, and then with expressions of righteous indignation explain in a press conference that Republicans just don’t care. Republicans fall for it every time.

Antifa are people that have been indoctrinated that America is an illegitimate country, built on the backs of slaves, racist to its very core where common citizens, especially those of color, have no chance at a decent life. They have been stirred up to a point of hate. They are either ignorant of history or just lying to themselves.

To Antifa, anyone that disagrees with them, is not entitled to free speech. Heck, anyone who disagrees with Democrats is labeled a racist, homophobe, whatever. They both see themselves as the arbiters of morality even while they are assaulting people and killing babies. Conservatives are not fascist. If there are fascists in this country, they will reside in the Democrat Party. What group of politicians works the hardest to control every aspect of commerce and limit freedoms?

If a group is going to seize power or arrange a civil war, you need a reason and that always points to a class of people, a faction, an enemy. And the Left is busy creating just that…an enemy they need to destroy in order to achieve their ends. You know, the middle class ‘racists’, ‘white supremacists’, ‘deplorables’, conservatives…all the people that are representative of the people that built this country. That would be everyone that isn’t a socialist, whatever the race. Hitler and Stalin would be proud.

The immediate goal of Antifa and the Left is to create chaos with anarchy close behind. The Antifa website, itsgoingdown.org admits that Antifa members are either Marxists, Maoists or anarchists. They urge their followers to make the country ungovernable and to participate in mass insurrection and physical violence….anarchy.

Many Democrat-controlled cities are close to anarchy now. San Francisco and Los Angeles are becoming unlivable. Dallas will not bother prosecuting theft unless it is over $750. Even the New York Times admits that Democrat-controlled cities are unlivable and that is saying a lot.

Why does the Left ignore Antifa? Why do they demand that prison populations be reduced? Why is the rule of law being assaulted? If violent demonstrations and mass shootings continue…the people will demand a heavy-handed response from the government…especially gun confiscation, making the country ripe for takeover. I am not convinced that the mass shootings as of late are totally unrelated. They seem to fit the intention nicely. Do not assume they wouldn’t stoop to such a low.

Who is funding Antifa has proven difficult. They are highly decentralized with loose affiliations with other groups. What we do know is that the Democrat Party and George Soros have used paid protest organizers and protesters in the past. We don’t believe the protesters are motivated by money, but rather their hatred of America. George Soros has an affiliation with Antifa through a group called The Alliance for Global Justice that supports Refuse Fascism, an Antifa group. Their goal is to “Drive out the Trump/Pence regime.”

There is no strong Fascist movement in America, but there is a strong Communist presence. Popular phrases such as social justice that Obama put into fashion are popular communist signals. The movement is now filled with every disenchanted dirt bag, with built-in Antifa Brown Shirts in attendance in case you’re not listening. This is no longer politics, but an attempt at a Communist/Socialist takeover of this country.

As we get closer to the 2020 election, and especially if the Democrats lose, I see cities like Portland, Oregon and a town near you descending into total chaos as the Left gets more aggressive in their attempt to be rid of Trump and the America we love.

If we do not get a handle on this problem soon, Western civilization will resemble a post-apocalyptic Mel Gibson movie.

Communist genocide/murder in the 20^th century is only dwarfed Islamic genocide/murder Muslims committed from days of its founder to the present. Stella Morabito writing for The Federalist says Communist 20^th century regime victims numbered to the rounded number of 100 MILLION. Bill Warner of Political Islam estimates 270 MILLION jihad victims died in 1400 years at the hands of Islamic theopolitical Muslims.

Just think! In about a hundred period Communist regimes kill a little more than one-third the victims of Islam motivated butchery. Keeping that in mind, November 7 will mark the 100^th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution that produced the first dedicated Communist nation.

A hundred years on from the Bolshevik Revolution, we’d do well to study the stages and trends that put free societies on the path to totalitarianism.

Scarcity, terror, and the mass murder of more than 100 million victims are communism’s main contributions to human history. As we mark the centennial of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia on November 7, we should never forget that legacy. Communism is a fount of human misery and death. Few today really understand what that system of so-called government is all about.

In a nutshell, communism enforces a privileged elite’s centralization of power. This means it always puts too much power into the hands of too few people. They tend to weasel their way into power as their ventriloquized agitators use talking points like “justice” and “equality” while promoting a false illusion of public support.

So, how would it ever be possible for a free society like America to succumb to such tyrannical forces? I think we’ve spent precious little time trying to dissect and understand this process. So, in this three-part series, I hope to map out six stages that lead us into this dangerous direction. Within each phase, several trends take hold. I’ll discuss the trends in more detail in parts II and III.

There is a lot of overlap among the phases, but I think they can be roughly identified as: 1.) Laying the groundwork; 2.) Propaganda; 3.) Agitation; 4.) State takeover of society’s institutions; 5.) Coercing conformity; and 6.) Final solutions. But first let’s look a bit more closely at what communism really means for human beings.

‘Power Kills. Absolute Power Kills Absolutely’

Thousands of texts examine and analyze communism ideologically, historically, economically, and so on. It always amounts to a bait-and-switch scheme hatched by egomaniacs who want to dictate to everybody. Why? Because it’s all about the consolidation of power by a tiny elite—in Vladimir Lenin’s words, “the vanguard”—who claim to promote equality and justice and blah, blah, blah.

But once communism gets its foot in the door and you don’t get with their program, it promises you death in a variety of forms: economic death, social death, and literal death. That’s predictable whenever you put too much power into the hands of too few people. And that’s why we should always firmly oppose any system that demands the consolidation and centralization of power.

Although communist and socialist governments murdered well more than 100 million people in the course of the twentieth century, that number spikes even further when you include the practical bedfellows of communism, like Nazism and fascism, for example. According to the calculations of Professor R. J. Rummel, author of “Death by Government,” totalitarian regimes snuffed out approximately 169 million lives in the twentieth century alone. That number is more than four times higher than the 38 million deaths—civilian as well as military—caused by all of the twentieth century wars combined.

As Rummel states: “Power kills. Absolute power kills absolutely.” The common thread that runs through communist and fascist ideologies is their totalitarian nature, which means they control people by breeding scarcity, ignorance, human misery, social distrust, the constant threat of social isolation, and death to dissenters. All in the name of justice and equality.

They cannot abide any checks or balances, particularly checks on government power as reflected in the U.S. Bill of Rights. They fight de-centralization of power, which allows localities and states true self-governance. Such restraints on the centralized power of the state stand in the way of achieving the goal of communism: absolute state power over every single human being.

Lenin’s Blood-Soaked Legacy

It should astonish us to realize that the obsessions of a few wild-eyed revolutionaries can blue-pill whole populations of peaceful citizens. But it’s all a matter of conjuring up illusions and mass delusions, no matter the brand of totalitarianism. Lenin was a fiery orator of propaganda, as was Adolph Hitler.

To achieve absolute power, Lenin focused on fomenting a class war, while Hitler set his sights on a race war. Either way, the divide-and-conquer modus operandi of fascist and communist demagogues is pretty much the same, no matter what each side might claim about the other. Their propaganda content may differ, but not so much their divide-and-conquer methods. Attitudes of supremacy come in a virtual rainbow of flavors and colors.

As Saul Alinsky taught and the agitprop [Blog Editor: I don’t know about you, but I had uncertainty about the definition of “agitprop.” Here is a definition at the end of this paragraph next to asterisk (*).]of groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center illustrates so perfectly, the goal of all such radicals is to seize power by fueling resentment and hatred among people through various forms of “consciousness”—particularly class and race consciousness. That’s what identity politics is all about. That division is a key tool for totalitarians in their conquest of the people. Once their organizations breed enough ill will, the “masses”—made up of mostly alienated individuals—can be baited and mobilized to do the bidding of power elites, with a rhetorical veneer claiming justice and equality.

Most of today’s enlisted rioters—groups that call themselves things like “Indivisible,” “Anti-Fascist,” “Stop Patriarchy,” “Black Lives Matter,” “Refuse Fascism,” or moveon.org—are pretty much unabashedly communist (or just plain fascist) in their goals and aims and tactics. The chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party of the USA, for example, founded Refuse Fascism. It’s a pro-violence group that planned street theater on November 4, with the stated goal of overturning the 2016 election and taking out the Trump administration.

If you’re a true student of history, you can see that this is an old movie: mobs of disaffected, alienated people being exploited and mobilized by power elites. Unfortunately, very few Americans today, especially younger generations, are inquisitive students of history.

Certain sports figures, for example, claim to be exercising their First Amendment rights by showing hostility towards the American flag during the national anthem, based on a superficial understanding of history. They don’t realize the net effect of their actions is to show hostility against the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment, for which the flag stands. Perhaps they don’t understand how their actions are easily exploited by those who would ultimately deprive everyone, including themselves, of all freedom of expression. Without freedom of expression, we all become slaves to the forces of tyranny. Sadly, using freedom to destroy freedom is an old tactic of all totalitarians.

Six Phases to Unfreedom

Many of the social trends we see today point to dangerous conditions in which a totalitarian system like communism can rear its ugly head again. If enough folks don’t push back against these developments, tyranny can secure a foothold. So let’s try to clarify some of these patterns so we might better confront them and preserve freedom for everybody.

At least two dozen major trends have unfolded over the years and continue to unfold that indicate an erosion of human freedom and the growth of a centralized power. I’ve grouped them into six different phases, even though there is a lot of overlap. I’m sure you can add many more major developments to the list. Below are summaries of the phases as well as the trends within each phase, as I see them.

1. Laying the Groundwork

This is usually a generational or decades-long process, in which minds can be closed to reason and more influenced by emotion and propaganda. This happens in many ways: through the mass bureaucratization of life that allows for policies that promote polarization, dependency, and human isolation; through disabling independent thinking by educational fads that actually cultivate ignorance and shun content knowledge; through the attack on the humanities in both K-12 and higher education; and through the lack of general knowledge about how mass psychology works.

All the while, as new communications technologies develop and proliferate, they are embedded into the groundwork that promotes tyranny over liberty. Through the effects of these trends, people become less open to logic, and more persuaded by the proliferation of images and emotional appeals, cemented by groupthink.

2. Manufacturing Propaganda

Propaganda has always been with us, and always will be. But as people become less able to discern fact from fiction, propaganda feeds on itself more intensely. As emotions trump facts, propaganda tends to become more forceful and more focused on driving people to agitate for collectivist agendas. It takes a multitude of forms, but the Orwellian manipulation of language is always the key to thought reform.

Then, journalists increasingly become propagandists, and promote illusions of alternative realities. This includes the revision of history, as well as trends such as gender ideology, which pushes to de-sex everybody in the eyes of the law. As propaganda takes the form of political correctness, it threatens people with social rejection if they don’t conform to the politically correct agendas. In this way, it induces self-censorship and preference falsification to create the illusion of public opinion support for its agendas. Political correctness is the sort of agitprop that can grow a cult mindset in the population.

3. Agitating the Masses

Once the groundwork has been laid and propaganda absorbed by enough people, agitation can proliferate. As Lenin made clear, agitation and propaganda go together and are absolutely essential to communist revolutions. As that sort of agitation becomes more prevalent in public life, there’s more speed on the road to totalitarianism.

Agitation can involve protests, parades, marches, and demonstrations. It also involves organized shout-downs of legislators and a hundred other means of trying to affect public policy by influencing public opinion. During this phase, imitative behaviors proliferate (such as we’ve seen among NFL players during the national anthem). It seems that hatred and frustration are more palpable everywhere in the society.

Indeed, the media, Hollywood, and academia—and the Southern Poverty Law Center—would have us focus on nothing else. We see iconoclasm in this phase, as in the defacing of public statues and national monuments. The education establishment becomes involved in politically agitating children, creating confusion and frustration, and even cultivating hostility towards their parents if they aren’t with the program.

4. Consolidating the Takeover of Society’s Institutions

About 100 years ago, the Italian communist Antonio Gramsci introduced his theory of “cultural hegemony,” which cast cultural institutions as the enemy, claiming they were used to maintain power. So the key to achieving communism in the West was through destroying its culture, not through promoting socialist economic policies that had little appeal in the West. This would require a “long march through the institutions” of society, destroying them from within so communism could fill the vacuum.

Radicals of the 1960s like Herbert Marcuse and Alinsky picked up on this theme, noting that “the system” (i.e., American freedom) could only be destroyed from within once radical operatives had control over society’s institutions. The deep state is one example that’s been building through decades of bureaucratic bloat, with operatives embedded throughout the government, including in the military and intelligence agencies. And, of course, the cultural takeover of the media, academia, and entertainment is both broad and deep.

But, most importantly, the mediating institutions have been relentlessly attacked. Those are the institutions that protect the individual from encroachment by the state, particularly the family, the church, and all voluntary and civic associations. We can see and feel especially how the family has been eroded today. All of these institutions have been deeply affected by statist forces, rendering them more vulnerable than ever to total absorption by the mass state, a prerequisite for communism.

5. Forcing Conformity

This is perhaps the most unsettling phase, when otherwise discerning people who have been duped by the rhetoric of social justice finally awaken to the deceit within the agitprop. This is the stage in which you are told to conform and convert—or else. We see small shop owners threatened with financial ruin if they don’t disavow their faith. We see Catholic nuns, like Little Sisters of the Poor, threatened for not disavowing their faith. We see echoes of Maoist-style “struggle sessions”—otherwise known as sessions of criticism and self-criticism—as college students are forced to admit to white privilege simply because they had happy childhoods.

False confessions proliferate, along with apologies and recantations for showing even the slightest hint of a politically incorrect viewpoint. A surveillance state can grow with new technologies being used for data mining. At the same time, human resources departments start telling employees to report for discipline any politically incorrect private conversation that they might overhear.

Millennial celebrity Lena Dunham modeled a Soviet-style surveillance state by tweeting to American Airlines that she overheard two flight attendants having a “transphobic” conversation for which they should be punished. The practice of ritual defamation—smears such as “bigot,” “racist,” “KKK”—become commonplace. And, perhaps most chilling, psychiatry is used as a political weapon.

6. The ‘Final Solutions’ Phase

Of course we aren’t there. Not yet, anyway. But perhaps you’ll agree that we should always be aware of the lessons of history if we don’t want to repeat its more unsavory chapters. In the last phase, which is fast and furious, totalitarian elites let loose their inclination to brutally eliminate their perceived enemies.

It happens in what Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov identified as the “normalization” stage, after subversion of a nation is complete. It’s as though they can’t do anything but eliminate their perceived enemies because they just don’t know how to do anything else. The body count in the Soviet gulag state, including reigns of terrors and purges intended to rid the country of counter-revolutionaries, was in the tens of millions.

In this phase, violence is considered simply a necessary means to achieving the goal of centralized power. There is not even a pretense of due process or respect for free speech. Yet there are pretexts given for eliminating perceived enemies, excuses that have the perpetrators projecting their own intentions upon their victims. That’s an old and tragic story.

‘Confirm Thy Soul in Self-Control, Thy Liberty in Law’

America is still a free nation with laws on the books that protect individuals from abuses by the state. But we should be very disturbed by the emergence of trends that, if left unchecked, would lead to the consolidation of centralized power by elites who would abolish the Bill of Rights. Communism, as well as fascism and all such forms of totalitarianism, is the natural product of such unchecked trends.

So when people disrespect the American flag “because oppression,” they tend to be clueless that their freedom to do so is extremely fragile. Freedom must be fought for, tooth and nail. Then it must be appreciated and nurtured, never taken for granted.

We are still in the fight to preserve freedom. But when we review the preponderance of trends that point us in that direction, we ought to pay attention to the symptoms and work to reverse those trends. We ought to be looking hard for a cure, or at least a path to sanity and balance.

This means filling the vacuum of ignorance with knowledge and teaching students how to dispassionately assess information and process it on their own rather than rely on emotion and groupthink—and finding a way to do so quickly. It means cultivating respect for reality over pseudo-reality. It means reaching out in goodwill to others, no matter their political persuasion, to de-fang the polarization causing so much alienation and unhappiness in our society.

All of these trends, which I’ll explore in more detail in Parts II and III, will lead to absolute power, if left unchecked. Centralized power, as crystallized in the political system of Communism, has always led to scarcity, distrust, death, and just plain human misery. It really does deserve to be buried in the ash heap of history.

As we try to stem such tides, I hope we can take to heart these lines from the second verse of Katherine Lee Bates’ grand hymn, “America the Beautiful”:

“America, America, God mend thine every flaw. Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law.” [Bold Text Blog Editors]

Individual freedom cannot survive if it isn’t balanced with a widespread sense of personal responsibility, self-regulation, self-governance, and the rule of law that allows for dispassionate due process is critical to preventing the loss of liberty that comes via its abuse. In the overall pattern of human history, this is the road less-traveled. But as America has proven, it is the only road that allows for mending flaws and the pursuit of happiness.
