Republican Study Committee

There are three things Congress can do today to fight the twin troubles of rampant unemployment and exploding deficits. We can cut spending immediately, prevent the job-killing tax hikes scheduled for January 1st, and begin tearing down barriers to job creation. Unfortunately, Congressional Democrats have used this lame duck session to push an entirely different set of priorities: higher taxes, massive spending bills, amnesty for illegal immigrants, and an expansion of the FDA’s power that will make food more expensive but probably not more safe.

If Democrats allow the massive tax increases on income, saving, and investment to occur, reversing that folly will be one of the first orders of business for next year’s House Republican majority.

In other news, opponents of ObamaCare received good news today when a federal judge in Virginia struck down the law’s “individual mandate” – which will force every American to purchase government-approved health insurance. In his ruling, the judge made clear that Congress lacks the authority to impose such a mandate. This decision affirms the concerns that conservatives have raised for nearly two years and likely paves the way for the Supreme Court to render a final judgment on the issue – unless Republicans’ efforts to repeal the law in Congress bear fruit first.

House Floor Activity – The following key legislation came through the House of Representatives last week.

·      

·       House Democrats voted last week to approve the DREAM Act, which offers amnesty to many illegal immigrants. The Senate attempted to pass the bill as well but has so far been unsuccessful.

·       House Democrats also passed a 423-page combination “food safety” and spending package less than 12 hours after the legislation was made public. The spending portion of the bill funds the federal government through September 2011 at a total level equivalent to FY 2010 levels (although some funds were redirected to liberals’ favorite pet programs). The “food safety” portion gives the Food and Drug Administration broad new powers over our food supply, which will increase the cost but probably not the safety of what we eat.

Outlook – Here is a preview of upcoming Democrat proposals.

·       Both the House and Senate could vote this week on a package announced by the President last week that, among other things, would extend most current tax policies for two years and continue for another 13 months the programs that provide up to 99 weeks of benefits to the unemployed.

·       Democrats continue to push for ratification of the START treaty and passage of an omnibus bill of more than 100 public land and water bills which could impede border security.
