I am a trekkie and sci-fi fan, well mostly in my youth than now. But still with that background I was fascinated to come across some military information that is in the early stages of development.
The British military techs have invented what amounts to a Star Trek style force field to aid in protecting armored vehicles with tanks in mind particularly. I say the early stages because it is not a case of the order going to “raise shields”. The stage that has developed so far is to enable a “supercapacitor” to dump energy into the outer armor plating forming an electro-magnetic field to repel missiles. The problem at this stage of development is that the supercapacitor only delivers the energy for about a second and that was to be time with the estimated impact of the missile.
In my opinion the limitations do not match the reality of an organized attack on tanks. Nonetheless, the potential for future innovation is quite exciting to speculate about. Expanding research could send man to no place he has gone before.
